Hi All

I tried to post yesterday but cannot find it, obviosly a newbie. I have a simple question with hopefully a sinple answer. Is it possible to broadcast a digital video signal such as from a sky box using a wireless LAN (g)? Is there a device that sits between the source (sky box) and the wireless router perhaps compressing stream into suitable bandwith for the wireless network? Quality is not a major consideration, I wish to watch the rugby word cup on my laptop in bed at some unearthly hour. any help is much appreciated

Building a PVR with a tuner would definitely allow you to do this ay you would record from the sky box and view it with your laptop.

The cheapest way you could potentially do it would be a capture card to something like Windows Media Encoder which can encode the stream and re-broadcast on the fly.

The costs come in with the quality of the tuner card you use (from $50 tom $300).

It may be possible with one of hte cheaper software cards, if your "recording" machine is not too old. Failing that the dearer cards use hardware encoding (Haupauge PVR-150)

I'm not aware of an out of the box solution to what you are after. But that's doesn't mean that one doesn't exist.

I think the US based Slingbox and the Sony LocationFree box also will do what you want. But as davidcole says a cheap option available to you would possibly be PVR software such as GBPVR with a PVR150 TV card connected to your SKY STB. GBPVR will happily stream whatever is on the AV inputs of the PVR150 onto your network and thus your Wireless router. Installing GBPVR then onto your laptop in Client mode will give you precisely what you are looking for. I have the same setup here and it works just fine.

Going out on a limb here, for a quick solution.

Wireless video sender, the type that you can get from DSE or jaycar. Coupled with a video capture adapter for the laptop?

Since the world cup is on TV3 the simplest solution may to buy a cardbus TV tuner card for your laptop. A quick look on TradeMe at present shows one for $44.94 Buy Now Of course if you are in an area with crappy TV3 reception and rely on Sky for your TV reception then this won't help!
