Hi All
Just wondering what folks use for mpeg to dvd conversion that is fast and reliable. I have tried a few demos and yhey have either been painfully slow (approx 3hours to convert 100mins or so, or the video and audio go out of sync.
I realize I will need to pay for one, which I don't mind, as long as it's easy to use and reliable.

Also, anyone use a decent mpeg editor(to remove ads)? Basically I want to be able to record shows/movies from TV and put them to dvd as I don't have enough HDD space (yet)

There's a few programs out there. I have used tmpgenc

which works well but I think is Shareware.

For a commercial product I have found the Mainconcept encoder

very fast and gives good quality.

As for editing mpeg2, IMHO I think the best tool is the Womble editor

I use that all the time to edit our ads and it works really well.

But these days since I tend to record natively in MPEG2 don't do much encoding, just editing

I recommend VideoReDo. It's not free, but is the best MPEG2 editor out there by a country mile. If your files are already in MPEG, you should be able to save them as VOB once you've cut them. This process is generally pretty quick too. Unlike most other editors (such as VirtualDub) it doesn't need to demux the file before you go and edit it.

You will need to use something like Super DVD creator or Nero to make the VOB's into DVD compliant files though.

There is a trial version available to try too.

I got an OEM Nero suite 7.5 with a DVD burner recently. I have used the Nero Vision on that, was simple and quick IMO.

Yes I would agree that Nero v7 takes some beating. I was able to condense and write 7GB of mpg file to a single layer DVD-RW and the result was quite watchable on a 42" Plasma screen. Its not free but its worth it...

I edit with uLead Mediastudio then encode the result with SUPER but it fails to work on this AMD X2 64 (which seems to fail to run everything properly)

i'm kinda stuck at the present hence my youtube channel being in a suspended state .

Can anyobody point me to a solution that is like mp3directcut, where it only edits the frames and headers and does not transcode preventing codec loss? I did find a plugin one for WMplayer on Giveawayoftheday a while back.

As I noted before, Womble works really well. And I use it on a AMD 64 (dual core) CPU with no problem

I've been trying womble as we speak and while it's simple, It's a nice application and the simplicity just works and it's cheap.

It works flawlessly with DVD footage and i'll be recommending it to a friend. The only thing the womble one won't do is integrate to Directshow for different codecs. which is is pain as I'd love to use it fo edit the N95 mp4 videos.

I use an archos AV700 for my DVR recording and edit on the device itself (hardware frame chopping which is lightning fast and lossless) It records in Xvid and ADPCM384 audio.

Mainconcept stuff is fantastic.

As for the first one, tmpgenc I'd steer clear as it uses a complex internet activation system as as we know, if the company folds or gets swallowed, you might be left with a dud as had happened many time before.

I can drive the good stuff like avid suites but I still like ulead for it's "quick in, quick out" ease of use but it is a huge application. I might see how the other Womble products fare.

VideoReDo was a dud it allowed me to trial but kept BUGGING ME! with this bright green screen saying it would work better with a trial key!

The mark in and mark out layers did not seem to be very intuitive either with mark in and mark out points not allowing me to cut the video and it seemed to love playing the audio for "Directors cut" with every video (Commercial DVD) I tried to edit...

Thank goodnes for Altiris SVS layers!
