I have a Dynamix UPS1000 which has performed well for over 4 years. Lately, not so well and I suspect the batteries are well overdue for a replacement.

I see replacement batteries (12V 7A) go for about $35 and I would need 2 of them ($70).

Does anyone have any experience of these and know:

1. How easy is it to change these batteries - is it something a novice can do, or would I need an electrician?

2. Whether it's worth just replacing the batteries, or whether I should go for something else (ie a different UPS model)?

only thing i have found with dynamix UPS's is you need to change the battery's more often than other brands, not a biggie.

ive replaced a couple of battery's in dynamix 650Va UPS before, and they were no where near as easy to do as other brands. other brands give you a nice door to remove the battery and they take about 3-4 mins to do. The dynamix took about 20+ because had to remove the case, unplug the screen remove the circuit board, which included unplugging it, and then remove the battery, then re assemble.

Not sure if it will be the same on a 1000Va one. but the ups are cheaper for a reason and i think thats one of the reasons.

Also battery's can be had cheaper than that. trade on them is well under the $20 mark.

as for getting a new one, just depends on what its backing up, if its mission critical stuff then it might be worth pending a little more and getting a better branded one, if its just for your desktop + other devices at home then it should be fine. We use them for desktops at work and they do the job well.

Generally the ones that give you a door are isolated designs, and the ones that trap the battery inside have the battery sitting at a decent voltage away fromm ground, so the batteries cant have their terminals in a manner that they are user accessable since they have hazardous voltages on them when the UPS is plugged in or operating.

I just got a UPS1000 from rp1790 last night for a crazy price. Don't suppose you have a pdf manual lying around do you? I know they're pretty simple, but I've never had a UPS and think it could be handy. I can find manuals for various Dynamix UPS's online, but not that one - I think it's a bit older. Mine has no letters after the model number. Is this model line interactive?

Looks like replacement battery is this one, out of stock, but with this alternate. I haven't done much checking on it though.

The manual doesn't mention replacing the battery. I'd just open it up, carefully.

pretty much all those 12v 7ah batteries are the same

and dont pay 35 for it either thats too expensive

There are 2 terminal sizes on the 7 and 9 ah sizes. The small ones suck if you have a larger terminal on the ups. Open it and check first.

It's used on my home setup. Essentially running a PC, a NAS and an external USB hard drive.

The battery doesn't seem intended to be easily user replaceable - there's no nice battery door like other models have, and a sticker sternly advising not to open it and that there are no user-serviceable parts inside.

Newer UPSes (slightly more powerful at 1200VA) seem to go for about $170 and advertise having a uder-replaceable battery. I'm just tossing up whether it's worth the trouble replacing the battery, or spending the $100 extra for a new unit - with fresh batteries, a USB connector to initiate an automatic shutdown of the PC if power goes off, and a warranty etc.

If you're replacing the UPS, and you're in Hamilton, I'll take the old one off your hands and pay you for it.
It's trivial to source the batteries and replace them if you know how.
I'm always looking for extra backups for systems I have at home.
Or if you are local, I'll help replace them for you.

Probably from shops that like to make it hard to buy from them, so dont have a link to buy one from.

I just get mine from PB tech. But they did have a few come thru with the same product code but with small terminals which I had to take back to them and get swapped for the bigger ones.

but the way you think everything should be is if they dont advertise a price or make it easy to buy from them you wont even bother.

I cant provide a link sorry. I have a family member that works for an importer and i get them for the price they are imported for. and from that basis im telling you what they are going for on trademe and the like of PB tech etc are making about a 80-100% profit if not more on them, hence me saying $20-25, they are still making a profit on them.

You may not be able to find that sort of deal online, it may be something thats insider knowledge or what businesses can get from other businesses via account and not something that joe public can get.

Is it ok to run a monitor and desktop PC through a UPS (Dynamix 1000), or should I just run the desktop? Also, should I bother plugging it in via USB? I've put it too far away from my PC to make it easy...
