I am nearly at the point of pulling the trigger on a new TV (most likely this) and was wondering how the sounds gets transferred back to my home theater reciever from both the freeview tuner and also any smart apps (mosty Plex)? Will it go via the HDMI connection or does it have to have a separate audio cable using the optical audio out from the back of the TV?
Technically hdmi can do an audio return channel, but personally I've always found the optical to be the most solid and reliable way of achieving this.
In some cases you may need to introduce a delay, to sync the visuals with the audio, and this can often be achieved via setup options at either end, ie on the TV or on the receiver.
I prefer to use the HDMI audio return channel. It's worked well for me.
Some receivers will only work properly with HDMI CEC if ARC is turned on (CEC is what lets, e.g. your TV remote control the receiver's volume or for a Chromecast to change to the right inputs).
Ok, thanks for the replies. I've just purchased the 55" Panasonic LCD mentioned in my first post so I will see how things go. Unfortunately my TV is wall mounted and only has an HDMI in the wall, it is possible to put another cable in there but a bit of a pain. I will try with the HDMI first and see if that works, if not then I will run the audio cable!
