All the regular audio outputs on my TV are used for other connections. I want one more, to plug into my Tovoli stereo radio, which has just one 3.5 mm input. The only audio output left on the TV is the optical ‘toslink’, which is something I’ve never wanted to use — till now. My question is, how do I connect a toslink output on the TV to a 3.5 mm audio jack that will plug into the radio? Is it even possible?

Toslink is digital and 3.5mm is analog so some sort of digital to analog conversion will surely be required.

I'm curious to know why you need to.

One of these and then a normal RCA to 3.5mm cable.

or if the tv is old enough to have analog RCA outputs and they are used elsewhere then just get a couple of RCA Y adapters to plug 2 things in.

As a cable such a thing does not exist- although you can get TOS to 3.5mm adaptors these are still optical,

You need a optial DAC,

something like this

but I am sure you they also exists on numberous .cn sites.....

I think that these will fix your problem without any fuss at all...

The simple solutions are best... I haven't had time to do this yet, but a couple of 1RCA to 2RCA plugs should do the trick. The only reason I specified toslink was that I thought it was my only course of action, overlooking the obvious. Thank you all for your comments.

FWIW - I use one of these for the job, only issue is the power requirement which I run off a USB port on the TV.

Thanks, this sounds like exactly what I want, and it's good to hear you're using one yourself. I would be able to use a TV USB port in the same way.
