Hello all :-)
I recently set up a HTPC to display on a 50" Phillips Plasma
I am using a DVI to HDMI adapter to pass the video through an HDMI capable Onkyo amplifier, (we use the amp to switch inputs to the Plasma from a PS3 our Skybox, a DVD player and the HTPC)
Generally everything works well, I worked out early on that the Plasma did not support the HTPC's default resolutions so set things up using a 17" CRT and changed the Plasma to the Main monitor and the CRT as a clone in the display settings. we are using a Readon 3870 with the latest (last weeks) catalyst bundle
Both screens display the Plasma palatable resolution 1360x768 well until we want to switch the Plasma to standby or off while the HTPC is still running (say while we are recording TV or using the FM tuner on the HTPC), when we do that the HTPC switches the display resolution to 1024x768 which isn't supported by the Plasma, requiring it to be changed manually. The display driver Moves the Plasma to the disabled monitors list.
I tried removing the CRT altogether but had the same issue when the Plasma was put in standby.
As I'd love to pull the plug on the CRT and free up the chair it sits on by the HTPC, I was hopping someone might have an idea on how I can force the default resolution to 1360x768 or persuade Vista to leave the display settings as I set them when the Plasma is powered down or the amp is switched.

many thanks Tim

I had a similar difficulty when trying to operate my plasma as primary (hdmi) and LCD monitor (DVI) as clone off my 8500GT installed in my HTPC.  On bootup the computer would always default to the monitor as primary and, depending on whether the plasma was on or standby, the plasma would be the clone or deselected.  Quite frustrating because the LCD is only for maintenance and programming tasks.  In the end I decided that on bootup the system must poll the DVI socket before the HDMI socket, and work on a 'first come, first served' basis.  So I have disconnected the LCD, and as long as I remember to turn the plasma on before booting the HTPC, it operates correctly (if I don't, I have no display at allYell and have to use memorised keystrokes to shut down blind).

Since I use hibernate most of the time, the HTPC 'remembers' the bootup state and there are no issues with not having the plasma on during wakeup.  Likewise, once the hdmi is live it allows changes of display, as I have the projector connected through an hdmi matrix, so I would be reluctant to 'lock' the hdmi settings for one particular display.

I would however be interested in other GZers input that may allow me to have the hdmi socket polled prior to the DVI so I can go back to cloning to the LCD.  That solution may also help solve the headline of this thread.
