Hopefully I've posted this at the right forum.

Anyways, um, so I'm deciding on buying a new 22" LCD Monitor for my new gaming rig, and as I am a complete noob at monitors, I've come to ask you guys.

What's a good brand for lcd monitors? And also, what do I look for when buying a LCD monitor? Like, what makes a lcd monitor a good lcd monitor?

I'd recommend either Philips or Viewsonic, I have a 22" wide screen Philips both at home and at work.

If you're able to, visit a computing store and see if you can view the different monitors side-by-side for a comparison.  I'd also suggest getting one with adjustable height - a monitor is much better at eye level than looking down (my previous monitor you couldn't adjust vertically).

Yeah, I've been told ViewSonics are good. But, um, what doe the contrast numbers (1:3000 etc.) mean?

Samsung used to make the best until they stopped using Samsung panels (ironic) in favour of cheap cheimei ones.

Now LG, BenQ and Dell (non entry level, containts samsung panels) are favoured as the best with Viewsonic being pretty good too.

Viewsonic? Hmm I had a few problems with mine.
Samsungs, all three have been amazing, as has been their local support.

I've had a few brands of LCD's in the  past thru work - Samsung, Philip's an DELL....I have a DELL 24inch 2408 at home(also had the 2405) .
Highly recommend the DELL (higher end models-as stated by eXDee) for games and movies (and asthetics)..
Aside from the great picture quality, the added features (usb hub/card readers/hdmi etc etc) are also a plus...
Having said that - i'd also recommend viewsonic (though only had viewsonic CRT's, and relying on the brand name as opposed to any quantified knowledge)
For gaming one of the more important features is the response time... 5ms and lower generally recommended.. (my 2408 is 6ms but i'm not a big first person shooter player - and i've never noticed "tearing" anyway.)

LOL! I'm sure it would be switched on... haha.

Im thinking of getting a ViewSonic VX2240w. It's got 4000:1 contrast level (dynamic) and 1000:1 normal contrast. has a 2ms refresh rate.

watcha guys think? cnt go wrong with that right?

I prefer Samsung panels, however viewsonic warranty is good weve had one monitor in the office replaced 3x now no qualms from viewsonic.
