On the TV side, there have already been a few pre-show announcements, but it looks like manufacturers will be pushing 8K heavily this year.

Sorry to who ever it was that ninja-commented on the thread I created and subsequently deleted for the LG 8K TV announcement. Since it was sort of CES related I thought it might be best to have it in one place.

Also sort of CES related, Samsung 2019 8K TVs first to get 8K HDMI 2.1 certification.

While an announcement of Vizio's 2020 4K TV lineup is not really news that affects us in little ole' NZ since they seem to be exclusively North American, more interesting is a quasi-budget OEM introducing HDMI 2.1 across it's lineup, plus dual DV/HDR10+ support across their LCD/LED all Full Array backlight, mostly Local Dimming, range. While it sounds like they have some QA issues, they certainly seem to be trying to one up the big players.

Also, 792 local dimming zones in the top range P-series Quantum X! Comparing to the likes of the Samsung Q90R with an apparent 480, the Q80 with 96, the Sony X950g with a guess of 60.

More lamenting noises...

LG has revealed their 2020 4k OLED TV lineup, and in Apple (and probably others) fashion, this includes the BX, CX, GX, and WX models.

Looks like the speculation was right, the CX lineup features a 48" panel. Nothing really groundbreaking though; they get a few extra modes (HGiG Mode for games, Filmmaker Mode for, funnily enough, movies), Dolby Vision IQ, and gen 3 ά processors. HDMI 2.1, G-sync, and FreeSync all continue on in 2020.

They are also rolling out the Apple TV app to 2020, 2019, and 2018 LG TVs.

LG being ‘inspired’ by Samsung (Frame) and bringing out their “Gallery” range of OLEDs. The downside I can see is all the workings are still behind the screen so you will need to hide those cables somehow. I assume the way an OLED screen is driven means a ribbon cable is required as per the “W” series tellies. So a “One Connect” style box not possible.

Be interesting to see how much the “R” is, now they have confirmed its release this year.

As for Samsung’s rotatable set, for people who are tired of holding a phone/tablet in their hand?

Technically CES proper doesn't start until the 7th, MURICA time.

Some TV OEMs have been/are doing presentations yesterday and today thus mostly TV related, but if anybody spies anything else, feel free to chuck it in here.

Yeah, I remember seeing the marketing for that last year when it came out in Korea. Very... uh... youth or younger, social media savvy demographic focused to put it charitably. But hey, if they think there is a market for it...

LG also announcing that Apple TV coming to 2018 and later TVs is interesting news. Thinking about their firmware support in this part world, I won’t hold my breath. When (if) it happens I can redeploy my AppleTV 4K I guess.

Using the “X” to annotate the tenth generation is a bit naff and smacks of me too.

I have to really laugh at the latest buzzword feature - "filmmaker mode".. The TV will disable all the crappy motion interpolation and smart features and will give you the picture just as the film or TV producer wanted it to look!

Well, Sony's announcement is a little bit... uhhh... bucking trend. While they too are adding a 48" panel to their 2020 OLED lineup, they don't seem to be that interested in things like 8K OLED, HDMI 2.1, HDR10+, or Filmmaker Mode. What they did include was a X-Motion Clarity mode that sounds suspiciously like BFI though. The A8 range now has the X1 Ultimate processor, but the A9 is continuing onward without change.

They also announced their 8K and 4K LCD range, which apart from the new ZH8 sounds like minor improvements over last years lineup.

Maybe they have some tricks up their sleeve for the PS5 launch, suspected later in the year?

They also announced another GPU too: RX 5600XT.

I was hoping for a contender card to take the fight to Nvidia in the higher segments though.

I was expecting to see a lot more to do with this, given that supposedly we're going to get an 8K capable console in the same year?
