Guys

Posted this earlier but don't think it worked. Apologies if its a double post.

I have just had myskyHdi installed - WoW on sports.....

Only issue is my nice 12month Sony telly only has 2 hdmi inputs and i currently have a PS3, DVD player and skybox all requiring an hdmi input. Appreciate I can use the PS3 to play dvd's but the mrs hates its control.

Is there a good hdmi splitter out there I could put the PS3 and DVD player on...Any recommendations please?

There are hdmi selectors, or you can get an av receiver which switches hdmi.

Or just put the dvd player on component, its SD only so has nothing to gain by using HDMI other then less cables.

Does she hate the PS3 console game controller or the actual PS3 remote control which is much better and user freindly for all of the other functions of the PS3. If you have only got the gaming controller, I have seen new Sony genuine remote controls for PS3 on Trademe for around $60. We retired our DVD player and just use the PS3, one less box and cables as well in the cabinet.

I would be worried about wearing the laser out in the PS3 - thats whats died in all the consoles I have ever had.

I've heard the Xbox had a really bad failure rate they called the ring of death [ has been overcome I think now ], but the PS3 failure rate was less than 1% I think, so I guess if you sat there every day all day playing / watching it your chances might increase as it would with any dedicated DVD player as well. Ours gets thrashed, had it for 18 months now, works mint without a hitch as did our PS2 and PS1 until they were retired for the next model when that was released.

Opposite for me

Old grey playstation - started to only read origional CDs and then only read silver ones, not the black ones.

That drove the replacement of it with a PS2 - that then started to only read origionals, so that got replaced with a newer thiner one with a ghetto external powerbrick.

The xbox started to lose its ability to read dvd+r despite having a samsung drive, thankfully I was able to put a generic drive in but you lose the fancy power off and it closes itself feature.

Fans and optical drives are consumables on a PC to me, and its just a shame they are not replaceable to the same degree on a console (xbox 1 excluded)

Thanks for the tips chaps...Didn't think about the PS3 remote or indeed new amp (maybe its time)..

If I connected the current DVD via component, would I still get the same picture quality as the HDMI...

Just wondering if the ' upscaling ' it apparently does would be degraded...

Being honest I find it tough to tell when the upscaling is running apart from a red light on the front.

Chances are no, you would not see a difference. The content on the disc is only 480i or 576i, not all players will upscale to the component out but really your not missing much, whereas the other 2 sources are HD and really need the digital connection IMO.

I would also suggest getting the PS3 remote as it works very well and is set out like most normal DVD remotes, I purchased one for the same reason you have the wife didnt like useing the PS3 controller.

This way you can remove the DVD player and sell it to fund the PS3 remote purchase :).

Ihave 3 devices that require HDMI (PS3, HD-DVD and HTPC) and only one HDMI input on my TV. I just picked up a low cost HDMI switch that has a remote control. When integrated with my Harmony remote, it's pretty seamless. And the switcher passes 1080p and HDCP
