I have bought a used car which has a dropdown TV screen with only AV in. There is a DVD player also but wanting to hook up a media player of some sort with movies on a HDD for the kids.

Obviously one issue is the 12v power supply but I think I can jerryrig a 240v power supply with inverters etc.

I used to have a Creative Zen media player that you could output to TV but got rid of that years ago.

What was the last generation of decent media players (e.g. Roku etc) which still had AV out? Maybe with a little digging I can find something.

Appreciate any recommendations.

Thanks this looks good. I saw that some older versions of the Roku came with AV out, but those are difficult to find locally it seems.

It might be that the AV-in in your car only uses the audio bit. Maybe ? No idea.

I guess the amazon thing could be good if you can get power to it. The DVD player might be good if you can put a card in it and send the signal via AV-out to the car.

I have a Honda with the same problem and never got round to a solution. I got a cable to play music from my phone to AV-in, but not video. The cars inbuilt DVD player worked fine but only for Japan region discs.

The current DVD player works fine. The car was originally NZ new and the DVD player still works fine with the screen and sound but I hardly buy DVDs anymore and looking for the simple option of playing media files.

Many android boxes still have AV out on a 3.5mm socket, and run on 5v so a simple ciggerate ligher power adapter will run them. I have never had any of mine die with unexpected power offs but they do take an eternity to boot up so you may want a powerbank with passthru just to keep them running while you start the car etc.

Thanks @richms that's very helpful. Have found out about USB to Barrel cables , so that will be useful and I do have have an older powerbank with passthrough. Just a matter of choosing a decently performing an inexpensive android box. Read some stuff about some HDDs (NTFS I think) not being supported on some android builds. I'll be running from a largish USB stick not a HDD however and if I keep file sizes down (no HD quality needed anyway) I can just run with FAT.

Can't find the manual for the DVD player online despite it being a known brand (Soundstream VDVD 200, mine has USB and SD but the manuals online don't have this function) but some archived sites state that it can support only 4gb USB drives/SD cards.

Old DVB-T or DVB-S receivers might also work for this and they may require 12 volt power.

I used a raspberry PI with a 5v power adapter make sure the image you use supports AV ouput or has av output enabled and the model raspberry pi has an AV out. Check also the AV cable is the right 3 pin type for the raspberry pi.

@rodimus, thanks for the suggestion, had a look at this as a solution a while ago but have no experience with Raspberry PI units have played a little with Ubuntu installations so if I can find a stable precompiled ROM and Kodi then should be a good solution.

One thing Im not sure of is the control interface. Do you use a IR/BT controller unit for navigating?

Screen is out the back and I would be controlling from the front which might need a solution, maybe touchscreen interface with video to AV out?
