Wondering if anybody has had one made before. Any examples of what you got and how much you paid would be awesome.

I am currently getting a quote for a concrete unit - but am expecting $$$.

TV units in the shops just don't fit real receivers and centre speakers. They are still built for skytv and dvd players... They will customise them - but I may as well get a full custom made one at that point.

Budby and Meade, Petone / Lower Hutt. Vauge memory of about 10 years ago it was $2K or so for a custom entertainment unit. Can't find a proper website, but some info here.

I am going to build my own for the reasons you state. A project for the holidays. Bunnings sell a range of panels such as this:

which are pretty solid and with a few carpentry skills and the right tools can turn out a good result. I have used these for other projects such as a home office (still finishing that one of)

Yeah that's what I looked at when I was thinking about making one. They have quite a few options which look nice and straight.

I currently have a Norstone Esse TV stand which I love, but I need at least 1.4m wide to cope with my new TV. So I bought a pine board from bunnings for it to sit on in the meantime :).

I used these guys -

http://redfurniture.co.nz/furniture/entertainment-units/

They customised one of their existing designs in CAD to my requirements (no centre speaker, but a recessed panel at the back for power boards, different feet and the drawers moved around). The cost of the the changes were $200 or so and everything went nice and smoothly.

125 kgs though... so it wasn't easy to move around.

Nice. Their stuff looks like my style, thank you.

I'm hoping to have one shelf 200mm for AVR and speaker. Then 100mm under for a robot vac.
