Stereo by definition is 2 channel there no point forcing it to be remixed/matrix'/whateverd to 5,1 unless you really like sound coming out of every speaker and don't care about how the song was originally design to sound.

It depends on your soundcard but usually you can right click the sound icon on the system tray, and click "Playback Devices". Click on the "Speakers" device and select properties. In the properties box there is a tab called (I think) enhancements and the option you want is "speaker fill".

most soundcards will let you clone the front to the back, but IMO that is stupid for several reasons.

firstly, it destroys the imaging

Then it usually means you are running a compressed bitstream to the reciever rather then uncomressed PCM. While AC3 is good, its not transparant and IME can be noticable on something thats already being butchered my MP3. Thats assuming your card supports a real time dolby or dts encode. My onboard does but since my reciever has no DTS decoder I have never used it and just use the 3 analog cables. Still only play music in stereo tho.
