Ok so my friend has bought this 7.1 setup from HN about 9 days ago.
Within a few days his center speaker became damaged - ie bad distortion like someone poked holes in the diaphragm, and it got worse. Returned and proven to be broken as bad distortion when hooked up to anything. So he got new speakers and the same thing is happening.

Where is the problem? Amp faulty? Amp too powerful (unlikely as he's never turned up more than "35" on the amp.

Speakers rating:25-150W
Impedance: 5ohm minimum, 8ohm compatible
F response: 85-20KHzSensitivity: 91dB

Amp center channel rating:
European: 140W at 6Ohm
Asian: 175W at 6Ohm
Speaker impedance: 4-16 Ohm compatible

Any hints would be great as he's going mad!Thanks again.
Told him to return the amp and speaker and get a denon avr 789 with lower wattage (90W) ... or to go with the more expensive Yamaha amps.

Hey just a quick check:
Are you doing the auto speaker calibration setup with the microphone in different positions, once each time you put a new speaker in?
What audio configuration are you using? If it's not picking up the right input type, Dolby Digital or stereo etc, then it might be applying the wrong one by default and sending giberish out the centre speaker. Unlikely, especially if the speaker is then found to be damaged, but worth mentioning just in case.

auto calibration: check (tick)

audio configuration: tried all sorts inc effects on and off

speaker is progressively getting more and more distortion/damaged (distortion happens when plugged into other channels confirming speaker damage)

Sounds odd mate,

One last thing I thought of this morning, The onkyos recommend you set the speaker impedence setting to 4 or 6 ohms I think if even any one of your speakers is rated less than 8 ohms I think it is. All this will be in the manual, near the front from memory. Could be that centre channel speaker is an odd impedance.

Failing that, I'd try a cheap throwaway speaker on the centre channel for a while to rule out any failures with that model centre channel speaker, and if the crap speaker develops issues too, then it's pointing to a failure of the amp itself. Either way something needs to be done and hopefully you have the support of your local dealer.

Get the amp checked properly. If it is faulty they are liable under the CGA for consequential damages so they would have to pay for the centre speaker to be repaired or replaced etc.

Yeah don't leave it too late or they'll move to wanting to service it instead of replace or refund.

Are you bitstreaming any DTS-HD HR or MA tracks to your Onkyo?

There's supposedly an issue with faulty decoding of these tracks on some Onkyo, Yamaha and Integra receivers.
