I've just spent $300 on a BenQ E2200HD monitor that has an HMDI slot in it. Basically, what I'm wanting to do is play movies through it on an external DVD player with the sound coming through my stereo.

Assuming I buy an HDMI cable and connect the DVD player and the monitor, if I want to get sound would I simply need to connect the stereo adaptor to the headphone jack in the monitor? I bought a split red/white cable some time ago so that I could play music on my laptop through my stereo, which works fine, so I'm just wanting confirmation that plugging that same lead into my monitor's headphone jack would produce the same effect for movies played from an external DVD player.

Sorry if this sounds like a ridiculously newbish question. I've googled for quite a while, but can't seem to find a definitive answer.

Ideally you want HDMI from DVD to AMP then HDMI from AMP to Monitor...
If your AMP doesn't have HDMI then next best is HDMI from DVD to Monitor and Optical Out for sound from DVD to AMP...

Hows that monitor? I had heard good things about it and was looking at getting one last week but as i would have had to order it without actually seeing one i went with the viewsonic vx2260wm which is also a 1080p screen with hdmi etc etc.

What Canterbury said is correct, but didnt really answer your question.. Yes if you plug that rca split cable into your headphone jack it will output the dvd sound to your sterio, however i would guess that will sound fairly average. Anything has to be better than the built in speakers to my viewsonic though LOL, talk about tinny! thank god for logitech z5500's :)

Yes taking audio from the headphone jack will work, but this is not a great option (the audio coming out of the headphone jack is likely powered by a really crummy amp designed to drive headphones)- sticking this processed volume into a stereo and amping it up will not really make you home theatre experience the best possible)

What you want to try to do if you can't do what canterbury suggested ( take the HDMI and dump it to an AMP), is to use the other better audio sources on the DVD player, next best choice would be optical audio (TOS link), but it sounds like your best option might be the standard Red White RCA audio, take these and run them to your stereo, this will give you the bext outcome.

It's really nice, apart from one pesky green stuck pixel off to the left (uuaarrgh), which has a strange habit of disappearing and then reappearing. Some DVDs look extremely crisp on there; I'd recommend the model to those wanting a good monitor for a pretty good price (around $300 from c1com.co.nz).
