Cool, so only about a 10x increase on what I paid for a Lifetime Plex Pass!

Excellent. Will spur more acceptance of Jellyfin.

I don't expect many new plex users now, just the existing ones so consider plex to be end of life.

Exactly my thoughts, Plex is not the only game in town, and this will likely drive users to alternatives..

I guess they're hoping it will drive people to monthly/yearly subs. I guess the desire for a steady income is fine, till they start hiking those up as well.

I went for Emby years ago. Idly considered a Plexpass a year or two ago as a backup just before prices started going exponential, so thats definitively gone out the window.

I paid around $200 recently, just before it went up back then..... in last few years they've had about 3 large price hikes.

They don't want lifetime subscribers. This is simply a move to move to annual or monthly subscriptions, which is far more predictable and allows them to assign resources in a more controlled manner.

Yeah they're catching up with the economics of how bad a Lifetime pass is for them. Went back and had a look, I finally relented to getting a Lifetime pass in Nov '21 for 89USD, before that I was paying 3.99/mo. Rough math I've had the lifetime for 54 months, which would've been $215.46 in monthly charges.

The stupid thing is, I was a fairly early adopter of Plex, but didn't bite the bullet because I always asked myself "How long will this exist for?".

I was an early adopter and paid $29US for Lifetime with some deal back in 2014. One of my better investments.

I toyed with Plex years ago when I was settling on a media server. It looks like it has grown a lot since then as a platform.

I currently use the free Serviio on my laptop as a server and watch on ATV with Infuse that I pay $20 per year for.
