Has anyone successfully managed to watch or convert HD files recorded on a Panasonic HDC-SD9 (.m2ts) into a "regular" format? ie. MPG, AVI?

I probably tried out about 10 programs before finding one called Wondershare which did the trick. But what a mission! The software that came with the camera is terrible as expected. But even with it, videos can only be convertedto mpg2 which is okay, but it's such a mission even then.

Just curious: I don't have a camcorder, of any variety. What programmes have you tried?

If you still want to experiment, try this, if you haven't already.

i've used tmpgenc, super and badabing to do just that - all worked fine, but took freakin ages as the h.264 acceleration doesnt really help out for these transcodes. of all the above i found that tmpgenc did the best job but it costs $$. super is a free option.

i might also add that i only convert them for uploading to facebook/youtube or sending to the folks in DVD format. They play fine and use about 8% CPU on my HTPC which is running Win7 and has a nVidia 8400GS card.
