That Yamaha listed above is fine, so are most of the Onkyos under 1k, but they are all Pass-through hdmi, so it doesn't actually matter, since they are just acting as an HDMI switch, it makes the cables tidier at the back, but doesn't add any extra signal processing or HDMI surround to the receiver, you'll still need a digital optical/coax to run the surround
You can't really go too wrong with Yamaha or Onkyo receivers, the 600 series Onkyos are good, the 300/400 Yamahas are also good, although I had an RXV465 before my current TR606 and it had some clipping issues, so i took it back and that's when I noticed the Onkyo on the shelf :)
I have moved across the ditch. Now residing in Melbourne as a VOIP/Video Technical Trainer/Engineer.
i have a older technics reciver at the mo but when i play bluray dts sound it makes a thud souns from time to time on audio via centre speaker but it doesnt do this via dolby reciver to old? or problem with optical cable ?

Not entirely true about the Onkyos. Anything from the TX-SR507 up will decode the HD audio formats. You can pickup one of these for around $500ish from JB from memory.
This is up on trademe at the moment which is pretty well priced additionally.
