Hi.
I have recently read a few threads on this board about setting up SkyTV on your computer using a DVB-S tuner, a Jaycar card reader and various software.

I have bought a Jaycar card reader and a DSE USB to Serial Adapter. The adapter is running as COM3.
On the adapter the little L.E.D is not lit up when plugged in not sure if thats ok or not?

I have the jumpers on the reader set to Pheonix and 3.5795Mhz with the switch pushed in. The power for the reader is through the molex plug on the reader. The switch on the card is illuminated (green).

Now I haven't got this to work at all and I have no idea what part is not working.

I've tried all sorts of software to try and get this card reader to read cards but nothing is working, Oscam, newcs, NDSCam.

This is the error I get in Oscam:

What does that error mean? I've googled it but no solutions as yet.

I'd really love to get this going as I spent hours on it last night (Christmas Eve). Wasn't until 3AM that I got to bed last night.

The LED on the converter lights up only while an application is using the port. We use the DSE converter a lot at work, it actually has a very good driver and found it to be better than most others.

The screenshot shows that it found the reader on COM3. Someone else can help further with OSCam, I have no knowledge about that.

Thanks for the reply! Okay thanks for confirming that. When I start OSCam I see the slightest flash on the converter LED for less than a second and then it gives me the Phoenix_Init returns error.

This sounds like there is a problem on the card reader. Perhaps I stuffed something up when I put the kit together?

No point bumping in this forum. In my experience, the people that read HTPC read pretty much everything in here, and bumping only clutters the front page.

If you haven't received a reply, it is typically due to the fact that no one has any further input.

This thread has 280 views at time of writing, so lack of exposure is not the issue.

Best to use the onboard serial port or a PCI serial card, which is what I use.

We had lots of trouble with USB-serial adapters mainly in conjunction with legacy communications test equipment.

Was a pain for workshop to have to hang onto older laptops to use as field testing equipment as newer ones dropped serial.

Okay well my board has Serial Port headers on the mobo (which is just I think 7/8 pins) How would I attach a Serial Port cable to that?

You just need to make a cable for it running to a 9 pin serial port.

The issue with card reader stuff is that it's a very grey area. From personal experience many people who know about these sort of things will keep below the radar, and to be completely honest the resources that have been posted here on GZ in the past are very good and those who contributed deserve a lot of credit.
