I have read in many forums that Sony has offered replacements to many of its American customers who experienced yellow tinges in their SXRD TVs.

I have a 60" SXRD that has been in use for 13.5k hours that is experiencing severe tingeing issues - is it still possible for me to get a optical block cleaning or special offer from Sony?

I have called them up but they seem to be quite reluctant in giving me any solid information, stating that I must first spend 200 bucks on getting a technician to see my TV first (which I am quite reluctant to do).

Please geekzone, has anyone heard of similar stories or had similar experiences that can help me out? Thanks in advance!

I went though this on my old 42" rear pro. In my case once they confirmed that it was the optical block they offered me the part for nothing but I would have had to pay for labour. All up I was looking at I think it was $500 to $700. I finished up getting a discounted TV from them instead. To be honest though I think I could have done better if I had been somewhat more forceful.

How many hours was clocked on your old rear projection, and when did you make the claim? I've been reading online and I wonder if the Consumer's Guarantees Act will help me in this situation.

It was I think a 2000 hours into its second bulb so I think 10,000 hours? It was over a year ago that this happened and at the time the TV was just over three years old.

Jacko3000 - how old is your TV exactly?
I honestly don't know how well you'd go if you took it to the disputes tribunal re: CGA...
Rear pro tech is dead in many respects, and while you would no doubt welcome a new TV from Sony... I just don't know if it would happen?

The Television is a little over 4 years old.

I do not know how well I'd do in the disputes tribunal either, but I feel really ripped off in regards to this product, as it had cost me over 6000 dollars and from a name brand - I expected a life well over 4 years.

This is also reinforced by the fact that brochures at the time in Rear Pro TVs stated that it can be enjoyed for many many years as long as you regularly change the light bulb - which I do. To me, many many years means more than 4.

Honestly, if 4 years ago the salesperson told me that there's a chance that a 6000 product could develop a green tinge covering almost half the screen in 4 years time , there is no way I'd purchase the product.

Any advice would be appreciated, I do not necessary need a new TV - I really just wish for them to provide the optical block (and I cover the labour).

I think you stand a good chance of getting an optical block (if available without a long wait) - just get in touch with the appropriate people. Be nice but insistent... I find muffins work ;-)

And don't forget to list all the other Sony items you have/had and the good experience you had and how it would be a shame for this to ruin your impression of such a quality brand.

I work in the car industry and when distributors consider a goodwill (out of warranty) request they look at customer loyalty - how many previous vehicles of the brand the customer has owned, servicing etc and what sort of damage the person could do to their reputation if they were pissed off - ie; a farmer that has owned 10 previous vehicles could influence a lot of other farmers away if he had a particularly negative experience.

Also, I think you'll find most people would expect a $6000 TV to last more than for years - CGA is worded "for a reasonable period of time". The average person would not expect to throw away a $6k tv every 4 years.
But as my wife says, you catch more flies with sugar, so try the nice approach first :)

Thank you very much for your replies, I'm not waiting for the technician to come to confirm that it's a optical block issue and that I have used it for over 8000 hours (sigh, i seriously think this is such a wasted cost :()

I'll report back with any developments!

Yes please keep us up to date on this as I too have an SXRD TV and although it is not experiencing any green blobs as of yet I would like to know the steps to take to get it fixed if it does happen in the future.

Sorry for the late reply,

The technician came over to check the TV. I told him about the Consumer guarantees act, and that I know this is a design flaw of Sony's TV. I also explained that I do not believe it is fair that an expensive television could not even operate for 5 years.

The technician they sent out went home, but could not send a report to Sony until I give them my original receipt (which I lost). After a very long search, I went to the original store I purchased it from and just got another receipt. This is very important, you must have a copy of your receipt or Sony won't care!

After giving the technician the receipt, the tech actually acted on my behalf and explained the situation to Sony. I received a call from the manager of Sony in NSW (odd huh?) and he agreed to cover all the costs except labour.

That was the same offer I was given. The problem was that the labour cost was significant and as the TV I had was only the 42 I decided that it was better to be shot of it.

I would expect this to fall under consumer guarantees, even after four years. They've admitted fault through their offer. I would thank them for their kind offer, remind them of the consumer guarantees act, and ask them to reconsider. If they won't go for it the you'll have to go to the disputes tribunal, but I think you have to deal with the original retailer if they're still in business. You should give the retailer a chance to make things right first.

Not good enough IMO, labour is expensive.

Paying for labour is fair in my books - if you like the TV, grab the deal.
If not, well that's your choice.
