Hello again

i recently purchased the alien anthology boxset on bluray, thought it an excellent way to christen my new home theatre set up. It seems that when i play these blurays through my sony Muteki 7.2 system i have a lot of trouble hearing the dialogue. I havent had this problem with PlayTV, DVD or streamed media

The explosions are fantastic, and are deafening when the volume is up loud enough to hear the actors. I have turned down the subwoofer send, and turned up the centre speaker level to +6. Still hard to hear

is there a setting on the muteki i should have it switched to? the ps3 sound is set to automatic, and i selected dolby II + Movie setting on the home theatre.

Or are these movies just mastered weirdly?

Can the 'Muteki' handle HD audio from a Bluray?

How have you got it connected to the PS3? - By optical cable or via hdmi?

Dolby II + Movie suggests your system is guessing where to play sounds rather than being fed actual surround sound information.

All connected with HDMI.

Dolby Prologic ii movie was explained in the manual as processing a 5.1 signal into 7.1 when needed

I'm not overly fussed about HD audio (sacrilege, i know - but my ears wouldn't notice the difference after years of playing in bands), more a good immersive surround sound experience with minimal "cork-sniffing" :)

perhaps i need to manually set up the ps3 to disable HD output?

Yup - you're simulating surround sound on your current setting.
How old is your Sony Muteki? And like Jaxson asks, how is the PS3 connected to the amplifier?

The muteki is about a month old, though i've seen it in the shops for about a year?

i have an optical cable i can use, but all runs over HDMI through the home theatre reciever to the tv at present.

Do not select Dolby II!! The amp should be set to automatic which will select the best option for the input.
Dolby II is a OLD format which did a fairly lousy (but good for the time) job of getting surround sound out of two channels. Bluray's have up to 7.1 discreet channels so basically you are cutting out all but the left and right channels then spreading them across all your speakers.. (ewww!!). Of course that is including the center channel which is where 90% of the talking comes from.

The PS3 will only send two channel stereo out via HDMI. Use the optical cable and it will send out decoded multichanel audio with a decent centre channel, which I think is what you are after. The HDMI output is a hardware limitation in the PS3 which I don't believe has been sorted in the later models, I have the original PS3.
i am not sure if your Sony Muteki -there are several models- can decode the PS3 bitstream output which could be another option.

Wow, really? what a total waste! i thought the whole point of HDMI was to be a one-stop-shop of hig definition traffic.

Disillusioned to say the least! Cheers for the tip!

Will run optical, and try and find an "automatic" setting on the home theatre when i get home.

I have a three month old PS3 slim connected to my Onkyo amp via HDMI, it seems to do 5.1 blu ray perfectly. During movies sounds come from all over, and the on screen display says it's in 5.1 mode.

Looks like it's HALF correct.

it says at the bottom:

When using an HDMI cable, only [Linear PCM 2 Ch.] audio will be output from PlayStation®2 and PlayStation® format software. To output Dolby Digital or DTS audio, you must connect the PS3™ system and the audio device using a digital optical cable and switch to [Digital Out (Optical)] under [Audio Output Settings].

No mention of ps3 software and dvd/br playback in that tip

Your PS3 CAN support 5.1 via HDMI - it's lossless.
The above information re: it only being capable of 2 channel via HDMI is incorrect.
Optical will not provide lossless sound as the cable cannot support the bandwidth you require to do this.

So basically, your Muteki is just on the wrong sound setting, change it to auto as previously suggested - and enjoy.

Rubbish.

Set your Muteki to 'Auto' or it might say surround or something. Basically you don't want it applying any of it's own manipulation. As above, if it's not on auto it's gonna sound eeeewh.

Use the info thing, press select or something when you're playing a DVD/Bluray. It will then tell you what sound it's outputting.

Check your PS3 audio settings and make sure there is a tick next to the various formats your Muteki know's what to do with. If it's not checked then the PS3 won't output it.

Use hdmi ONLY!

Do not use optical.

Also, I'd be setting the PS3 to PCM which will make the PS3 do the decoding.
IF your Muteki can accept this input then you'll get Full HD audio.

Also turn off any Dynamic Range Control which is kinda like a 'midnight' setting which compresses all the volumes to be similar between explosions and talking etc.

(I however actually run this compressed because a bomb explosion is less likely to wake my kids this way!).

OK I just googled this for you and you're likely to see PCM on the front when you're getting PCM data from the PS3. That's fine, it just means the PS3 will do the decoding and will pass the raw full surround sound as PCM data to the Muteki.

You'll be getting full HD audio but your Muteki won't say Dolby HD or DTS Master Audio etc because the Muteki will be passed info that's already been decoded. That's Fine as it's the same audio, just pre decoded for you.
