Anyone played around with this? From what I can figure you have to have a pc on a network do all the encoding and send it to the PS3 from there, using Tversity or WMC etc. My file server doesn't have enough grunt to do this with 1080P res video, plus it seems a pretty primitive solution to it all really.

I have a WDTV live in our media room sending divx etc to the projector but have a 55" LG 3DTV in our living room with a PS3 on there that we want to stream m ovies from the server on sometimes without having to move the WDTV around all the time. Surely a PS3/360 with a tonne more grunt than the WDTV should be adble to do this..... :\

Ive run 1080 MKV via my P4 2.4 using PS3MediaServer - takes a while to get started and you dont try forwarding etc but it plays fine :)

Whats your file servers specs ?

yeah, I use PS3 Media server. it works pretty well except, as above, don't even bother trying to fast forward or rewind. even pausing can be pretty dodgy

In other words, if you are trying to watch a film make sure you have enough time to watch the entire thing in one sitting,

And this is where the PS3 falls over as a home media unit.

I have one and it fills most of my needs, but they are not that capable with many different media formats and do rely on a media server doing most of the crunch work for some formats.

I watch all sorts of video from all sorts of sources, and the PS3 and PS3 Media Server work well. I don't even know if it does any transcoding, since it's sitting on the PC in my office, and i'm in the lounge. I don't fast forward or rewind movies though, just pause them. I do fast forward TV shows, which I watch a lot of, and that works fine - 1.5X, 10X, 30X, or 100X.

I thought they could play the xvid/divx files, but maybe not. My xbox can, but that is not really relevant here!
You could also try have a look at what the video and audio format are inside the mkv. If it is h264 you may be able to get away with using something like avidemux to just copy the audio and video into an mp4 container which takes about 2-3 mins as it is not transcoding anything.
A friend of mine with a PS3 has done this before and it worked fine for most HD movies. As I understand it, this works because although the PS3 and Xbox can decode h264 and aac, they cant read the mkv container, but put it into an mp4 or m4v container which they can read and all is well.

You could also use Yamb

It hasn't been updated in a couple of years, but it still seems to work for me.
