For those who haven't been following Windows 8 there is an interesting blog here:
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/b8/archive/2011/09/02/reflecting-on-our-first-conversations-part-2.aspx

Myself, I have been wondering what the future is for Media Center and for now it appears it is safe. But, for how long remains the question. Very low usage stats according to Microsoft.

Overall it has appeared that enthusiasm has dwindled, a lot of the 3rd party plugin sites which sprung up with MC 7 have not had a lot of activity of late. Microsoft themselves stopped producing MCE hardware (remotes & keyboards) which made me wonder about the future.

I would love to see an apps store for MCE, support for Facebook, You Tube etc. Any plugins / apps require a lot of searching and in many cases are outdated or orphaned.

I really do love the product and friends who see the UI and what can be done with it love it ......

Anyway, just my thoughts.

If Microsoft would put some effort into it, and have Zune Marketplace movies and music available directly from the MCE interface, that would be a push in the right direction.

i'd be happy if they picked one (mce) or the other (zune), as long as they incorporated tv tuners and the guide, and it stayed 10-foot friendly (remote-control friendly)

windows 7 embedded is also out now, and that gives device manufacturers the ability to deploy a componentized version of windows to a small footprint for the likes of a STB or TV. be interesting to see how this is carried forward to w8

This may point to some direction .... or lack of? They really do need to look at their marketing department, to be honest you don't really see them pushing their products at times i.e. Windows mobile 7.x, Zune, Media Centre.

"Microsoft is discontinuing the Zune media player, which it launched five years ago in the hope of taking on the iPod."

I make some limited use of Zune due to having a WIn 7 mobile. Hate it. Won't play video taken on the phone properly (chopping, hangs). Slow. Resource hungry.... won't miss it.
