If I have a reciever with HDMI 1.4 and a TV with an older version of HDMI will the audio return work or do I need to wait until I upgrade the TV.

Unless the TV supports it too, then you will have to upgrade it. And use the correct HDMI port on the TV as well.

Thanks for the help. I have freeview built into my tv. I have two options. I have an optical audio out, or I have HDMI out. Ideally I would like to be able to send audio to the reciever via HDMI as this will enable me to control reciever volume from the TV.

Three HDMI in ports with no apparent differentiation between them.

What TV does you have?
Panasonic? Sony? LG? Samsung? Other?
What age? And can you see (ARC) written next to any of the HDMI ports?

I would go with optical if if your having no luck with HDMI it does the job considering FreeviewHD only broadcasts in 5.1 or 2 Channel on the non Dolby Channels
