Simple query, all in the title. Have hunted through specs and forums, but no one specifically seems to answer this: I'm looking to install a DVB-T card as soon as I get out of this godawful valley in Wellington, and the WAF on the media center depends on any many channels recording at once as possible. How many can the HVR4400 handle at once?

Depends entirely on the software you use. If you use software that can support recording of multiple channels on the same MUX you can potentially record every channel on that MUX. You can't however record multiple channels on different MUX's. If you are just using Win7 MCE you can record one channel at a time.

The HVR-4400 is a quad MODE tuner, which means it can do analog, DVB-T, DVB-S, DVB-S2.

It only has a single DVB tuner, which means it will only be able to watch or record one freeview channel at the same time. You can probably use it to record more than one channel ont he same mux (as noted above).

The Hauppauge Nova TD-500 and HVR-2200 or HVR-2210 are all dual TUNER cards, meaning you can record one mux, whilst watching another, or record from 2 different muxes at the same time.

There is a quad terrestrial tuner card in Aussie: http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1562182#.

I haven't seen it here in NZ*, but it would (presumably) work here if you could import one. I'm also not sure of the state of its linux drivers, if that was important to you.

* on a related rant, there seem to be an increasing number of tech products which only seem to make it as far as Aussie. Other annoying recent examples include the Asus PA238Q IPS LED monitor and the draytek and bullion range of routers and modems.

Sorry, yes, I should have made this clear. I meant it only has a single DVB (Freeview HD) tuner.

A bit myopic of me, that, reflecting my own bias against non-HD satellite Freeview and soon-to-be-gone analogue! :)

I understand completely about your bias against non-HD satellite as the drop in quality is noticable. Unfortunately I live in a house where DVB-T reception isn't currently available, so DVB-S is the only option.

Having DVB-S fill in programming guides automatically is very nice (although the DVB-T programming guide downloaders seem to have improved) so it can be useful to merge the DVB-S programming data even if you use the DVB-T channels.

There are a couple of australian channels on DVB-S that broadcast in HD; GEM is in 1080i and SBS HD in 720P.

Still, I keep my hybrid cards in the hope that one day I will have that lovely DVB-T signal again.. ;-)

You need a DVB-S2 receiver/card to get GEM. They are on Optus D1:
