I want to be able to download a movie (from iTunes or other place) on my MacBook pro and then connect it to my Sony bravia TV (I have the cables) to watch on the bigger screen rather than the 13" screen

iTunes tells me that I can only watch it one device at a time. Is there a way around this. Is another rental place better.

Do I need to have the apple TV box or similar

So just to clarify your Itunes ? Mac setup is pretty much confusing your second connected monitor (in this case your TV) as a second device instead of screen 2??? That's really odd I would expect to never have this issue as it's not another device it's an extension of your laptops monitor.

I could only suggest if you get no joy on here flick a email to Itunes support or scrawking their forums or faqs. Best of luck getting it solved.

To save sanity, an AppleTV be the easiest and quickest solution. Although, you must use the right connection for HDCP content to be displayed. are you using the certified mini-display to HDMI adapter?

Internet is my backyard...

When I connectthe laptop to the TV, the TV mirrors the display on thlaptop and I can view you tube clips, photos or whatever.

So I rented a video from iTunes (which took ages to download) and when I wanted to watch it said it can only be watched on displays that support HDCP

Does that mean

1. Do I need amother / different cable
2. Do I need a device like apple TV
3. Do I need a different TV (I only got this one Two weeks ago)
4. Do I need to hire videos from another source

How do you connect to the tv? You must use HDMI and with certified mini-display to HDMI adapter like I said earlier.

Otherwise your easiest way is AppleTV and AirPlay it from your MBP iTunes to this AppleTV.

You only need HDCP if you are downloading HD versions of movies. You will get HDCP if you connect your TV using a HDMI cable.

If you don't have a HDMI cable then you should download the SD version of movies.

Nothing to do with second device, or Apple TV.

Thanks for all this. I now realize that I can't use the VGA cable with the (expensive) adapter to fit the MBP and have to use a HDMI cable but ... I don't think there is an HDMI port in my MBP!!!

There isn't, but you can get a Mini DisplayPort (the port on your Mac) to HDMI (the port on your TV) adapter. It looks the same as the adapter you're using for VGA but instead of a VGA plug on one end, it's a HDMI plug.

you also need the actual HDMI cable to plug into the Adapter, and then the TV. You're looking at $50 for the adapter from Apple, and about $20 for the HDMI from The Warehouse.

That's half the cost of an Apple TV which will be a better long term solution to this problem.

What ports does your MBP have? Some of them have DVI rather than DisplayPort.

I think I will go the apple TV way - avoids the connecting cables each time and means I can go VGA or HDMI ( I think) so I can get movies in SD or HD

I assume that it just mirrors whatever is on my ipad or MBP. I guess I can send the sound to my Stereo amp from the TV through the headphone jack via the aux connection so I can get good sounds esecialky for a music video.
