If nothing else, understanding how it works gives us options.... particularly if things change again in the future.

RVanGelder's software is nice and simple too.

Pretty much sums it up for me too, and i would fing love a proper answer to the question while they're at it.. hey MS guy?

And although these days were all pro MS (gotta lol at the change there) i still pay for an extra copy of Windows purely to run on my MCE, so the support would be kinda nice..

Does anyone know what I need to setup DVBSNOOP + EPGSNOOP to make produce tvguide.xml from EIT stream? Would an HVR3000 do it? What flavour of Linux? Any how-to guides anywhere?

The lack of response from Sky, and more importantly the lack of Sky EPG data for MCE is driving me and my MCE buddies bonkers.

The lack of response from Sky, and more importantly the lack of Sky EPG data for MCE is driving me and my MCE buddies bonkers.

I'm currently writing up a bit of a guide for this, stay tuned.

RVanGelder's app works perfectly on my XP box, but brings up a "FreeviewToXMLTV has stopped working" window on the HTPC running windows 7. Anyone else getting this?

Am seriously considering reverting to XP for the HTPC, I still can't get MediaPortal to function after two Windows 7 reinstalls and over 100 hours of pulling my hair out.

It's probably something pretty easy to fix.
Would you mind running it from the cmd prompt? It should bring up a "has stopped working" pop up. Click Close Program, then some debug text appears. Could you please copy it into a private message to me?

I'd just like to say thanks for epgsnoop.

I'm a windows/SageTV user (sorry to the MythTV people) and this has just about saved my life.

Having never used any form of linux, this last week I've managed to install Ubuntu and get epgsnoop 0.81 working. I then copy off the XML file to the Windows PC. It was a long steep learning curve and I'm still very near the bottom.

I've had to do some edits to the data using sed - to remove some funny codes included in some fields, and also changed some desc lines to put in 'No Description Available' where there wasn't a value as otherwise tv_cat output some error messages and does not put a description field in at all - not that it really matters.

I'd like to upgrade to 0.82 and newer versions as and when they come out. I haven't worked out how to upgrade yet, so it would be great if you could bare us poor newbies in mind when you're knocking up your guide

Now this issue is getting silly. I guess we have been lucky in NZ that it has taken someone this long to try and squash the home brew PVRs to make sure you buy or subscribe to the expensive non networked and content locked down TV based PVRs

This is almost enough to me me turn back to torrents 8(

Another approach, if the issue is of copyright over the EPG data as published, is to create our own for NZ. Just a few people,"adopting" one day a week to fill in the program data (or moderate public entries if others want to contribute) for the free to air channels on a Wiki style page, could then have the data exported to xmltv format on a download link.
Maybe operate on advertising or donation basis to pay the contributors a fee for their time.

The other option to avoid shutdowns or D&D notices for the sites hosting the file, Torrent the file. It's only tiny so shouldn't take up too much bandwidth, especially if well seeded. Or like other internet services like NTP, just have a DNS round-robin for multiple sites hosting the file, with the DNS entry hosted in a free country.

Install Ubuntu – latest is 9.10
Create a user called ‘tv’
Once installed, open a console window
sudo apt-get install dvbsnoop
sudo apt-get install python (don’t know if this is needed or not)
sudo apt-get install dvbtune (dvb-apps may supercede this, not sure)
sudo apt-get install python-setuptools
sudo easy_install epgsnoop
sudo apt-get install dvb-apps
sudo apt-get install xmltv

Use file explorer type window
Go to $HOME/tv and create a folders
epg
LatestEPG
.epgsnoop
cd to .epgsnoop
mkdir SKY
mkdir FREEVIEW

Copy the config files for sky and freeview into their respective folder (created above) and rename them channels.conf
Edit the files to use the channels you require

Copy file following files into folder /home/tv/Documents
editscript1
editscript2
epg_all.sh -right click, permissions, make executable

In file manager type window, find ‘LatestEPG’ folder, right click, Sharing options, share this folder. It will say ‘Sharing service not installed’ click to install the service.
Share the folder as ‘epg’ and give guest users read only access.
You may have to reboot here and do this again.
