Quidam: I'd also say that if there is one thing Sky doesn't want, it's bad publicity. For this reason alone, if there was even a hint that this could be taken to the wider media, you might find that they call off the attack dogs in spectacular fashion.

History says otherwise - Sky seem to get far too much pleasure out of fighting dirty. They usually target at their competitors, but customers are advised not get in the way either.

If you really want this issue broadcast (as opposed to just blogged about) then your best bets would be Media7 on TVNZ7 or Mediawatch on National Radio. It's far, far, far too technical for Close Up, Fair Go etc. Attempting to visualise the Target special on EPG redistribution rights has given me an uncontrollable case of the shudders...

wazzageek:
As my guess ... I would assuming that they sell the license to re-distribute scheduling information to other publications (not just on the intarwebnets) - local papers, the Listener, TV Guide, etc.

Perhaps the legal team is worried about the non-intarwebnet publications learning about a precedent being set where an entity can retrieve the scheduling information for free that a source of revenue will be lost?

Maybe I wrong on that count - but it's the only real justification I can think of.

Perhaps, but at least some of those publications would need to get the information more than 8 days in advance in order to meet printing deadlines. For that there is no free alternative.

And the publications are profiting from it.  Us HTPC owners are not...

I know the chap that does the MediaWatch show on National. Unfortunately I'm in ALK atm, but when I return to wgtn next week I'll have a chat to him about it.

All this validates my deliberate decision to avoid SkyTV since they mucked me around once too often in 2004. It appears to only be getting more and more silly.
Best of luck to reven!!

Yet another reason why we need to change the law so that the concepts of copyright, IP, and patents only apply to commercial for profit entites, and hobbyist and personal use of anything is always fair use.

I'm a geek, a gamer, a dad, a Quic user, and an IT Professional. I have a full rack home lab, size 15 feet, an epic beard and Asperger's. I'm a bit of a Cypherpunk, who believes information wants to be free and the Net interprets censorship as damage and routes around it. If you use my Quic signup you can also use the code R570394EKGIZ8 for free setup. Opinions are my own and not the views of my employer.

It's not that simple unfortunately.

Open Source is a good example. Things can be copyrighted and then made available under a specific license. If copyright, IP, and patents only applied to commercial for-profit entities, then Open Source movements would be excluded. Sure, they could then pilfer from commercial software without fear, but they also couldn't protect their own software licensing.

Yes.  Perhaps the site is in the process of being refreshed?

yeah there was quite the back and forth, I kept trying to compromise with them and take down anything to do with sky or NZ and EPG.  but in the end it wasnt worth the risk of them trying to come after me.
