I located another fine EPG source for a Freview XMLTV listing at
http://nzepg.org/freeview.xml.gz

This one has got my eyeTV back on track. Thank you to whatever anonymous source is hosting this, I would gladly pay you money to keep it running!

About MHEG-5: it's better and worse than you think

The mheg-5 (ISO/IEC 13818-6 type B) data stream is available while you watch, record, or purposely tune-in to get an epg from any NZ MUX
The Elementary Stream for mheg ISO/IEC 13818-6 type B runs at ~ 237kbs, VS the EIT which contains 16 channel(s) and 3482 event(s) runs at ~ 175kbs and the programme names are redacted of course.
ISO/IEC 13818-6 standard alone is a 37Mb pdf ...

I have no doubt that extracting the necessary data from the broadcast MHEG-5 EPG will require some complex code, and producing that will be a non-trivial effort. However I'm also convinced that obtaining EPG data for a HTPC from the actual broadcast EPG is the best solution.

It's an unfortunate truth that the best solutions are often not the easiest solutions.

Are you able to extract and e-mail me the "a" file. I've been so far unable to extract the MHEG-5 app via my satellite connection (I know less about satellite tuning parameters than I do about processing data files). I have the PDF files you mention. PM me [email removed]

I don't suppose someone could walk me through using Windows 7 task scheduler to run RVanGelder's FreeviewToXMLTV? It runs perfectly if I run it, but crashes when task scheduler does.

It could be a problem with the current directory. I've improved the program to cope with a different current directory than that containing the app.
Download it again and see if that improves matters?

Let me know how it goes via private message?

rvangelder, is it possible to get the program Category to appear in the XML?  Such as Kids, News, etc.  programs can then appear in the MediaPortal TV Guide in a colour based on the category, which would be useful.

I'd like that too, but categories aren't available from the xml source files. Sorry.
About a year ago, I asked freeview to add categories, but I got no reply. Funny that.

loryda:
tr3v: If the EPG goes, so does my Sky sub. They could be doing me a favour :-)

Does anyone know why is there no EPG in Windows Media Centre in the first place?

Holllllaaaaaah!

Pretty much sums it up for me too, and i would fing love a proper answer to the question while they're at it.. hey MS guy?

And although these days were all pro MS (gotta lol at the change there) i still pay for an extra copy of Windows purely to run on my MCE, so the support would be kinda nice..

Alex.

This has been discussed already many times. You can have the eight days EPG on DVB-S. On DVB-T you only get now + next EPG, because that's all Freeview broadcasts. However the full eight days is also sent down using MHEG5 - this is not supported by Microsoft.

If you have both DVB-T and DVB-S you can get the EPG from DVB-S and map to DVB-T.

There's an ongoing project in another thread to create a program to grab the content of MHEG5 and make it available to MCE. Stay tuned - keep looking in the forum, it will be announced when ready.

+1 for the nzepg.org listings. I've had a script on my mac mini feeding listings into EyeTV for the past year or so. While I'm not getting quite the same info it was nice to be able to just slot in the new url... hopefully these don't go down too otherwise I'll have to live with the now/next data I can pick up from DVB-T

I wouldn't hold your breath for a new url, especially not of sky content.  I'm not sure how freeview/tvnz/canwest etc feels about the data being hosted but there is nothing to stop these companies from doing the same thing that sky did and asking the data to be taken down.

I'm hoping they don't, but if they do I'll have to find some other way to get my epg data. freeviewtoxmltv looks like it could be a winner... I'm happy to test on my Mac and my Windows box (EyeTV and 7MC) if it helps everyone get reliable and quality listings (at least for Freeview, I neither want nor can afford Sky!)
In saying that it would be nice to have a way to extract the data from the MHEG stream... For those with EyeTV, the word on the street is Elgato is looking into this.

I use DJKXML - never misses a beat. Then upload the xml using epgstream. Targeting EPG streams like xmltv.co.nz is a stupid move by Sky and shows a complete lack of understanding of how their customers actually use their product.

Yes, and it has the program category information, but not the program classification/rating, eg, PGR, AO available using FreeviewToXMLTV.

I'm wanting both the category and classification.  Can the person compiling epgnz.000a.biz please add classification into the data if possible.  eg.

<rating system="nz">

      <value>PGR</value>

</rating>
