According to the user manual (which is fairly vague), it's not a VGA port - it's a RS-232C serial port for the connection of external equipment to control the TV remotely.  So as mentioned, if you get the VGA HD cable then you will also need a VGA to DVI converter (make sure you get the gender right - should be female VGA to male DVI if you are connecting directly to the TV, or female VGA to female DVI if you are using a male-male DVI cable).

...and to really complicate things, you'll also need a female 2xRCA to male 3.5mm audio jack cable as the LG seems to only accept PC audio via a 3.5mm jack.

Right i think i get this cable stuff, i'm getting the VGA HD AV Cable with a VGA to DVI adapter but you've lost me on the audio bits.
In the past when i've connected my laptop to t.v's i've just used speakers via my laptop but if i can get the sound through the t.v that would be much better. it's frustrating doing things on a budget, it would have been so much easier if i could have bought a brand new t.v.

If you have the original analog cable for the Xbox (six coloured plugs on the end) then you could just do this:

Then you just use your HDMI to DVI cable for video, (which you already had working), and this trick to get the audio :)

The XBox only outputs audio via RCA cables (red and white) or optical (TOSLink).  Your TV only accepts audio via a 3.5mm jack.  So you need a 2xRCA to 3.5mm adapter e.g. http://www.dealextreme.com/p/3-5mm-male-to-2-rca-female-audio-adapter-26786?item=1

Yes, as long as you have all the right genders for the adapters and cables :-)

No, you need one with a 3.5mm headphone style jack.

I posted a link of the type of adapter to get... it needs to fit the audio in jack on your TV adjacent to the DVI port. It should be a 3.5mm connector the same as you would find on standard headphones. I don't think I can really explain it any simpler - I'm off to bed!
