JohnPorter: Are you in the South Island, Grant?

Nope.  Right up in the Far North where it's summer already Smile.

JohnPorter: How do you get into the installer menu? I have done system test and it said it was connected ok.

1)  Press SETUP button on the remote.
2)  Press 3 for SYSTEM SETUP
3)  Press 4 for SYSTEM SETTINGS
4)  Press 0759 SELECT to enter the INSTALLER SETUP
5)  Press 3 to check MODEM SETTINGS
6)  You should see INTERNAL, TONE with no DIALLING PREFIX
7)  Press GO BACK
8)  Now press 5 for NEW INSTALLATION

MySky will do a whole lot of signal tests etc then will phone home and hopefully that will be the end of your problems in the same way it was for me.

Good Luck!

Reon, I presume you have not had your phone disconnected recently, or exceeded your PPV credit limit (ie, the known reasons that should legitimately cause this). Has anything changed recently for you, with Sky or your phone service? The only things with me are Sky's new satellite and Xtra's unleashing, hence my harping on them as likely suspects. Or maybe Sky is updating postcodes, and got mine wrong.

Grant, any idea if everyone in the whole country uses the same 0800 number? If so, then that blows the postcode theory.

Thanks for that. Watching the tech enter it, I knew it was a 4 digit number, and no digit could be 1, 2, 3 or 4 cuz that would activate another menu. And I thought the last digit was a 9. But I didn't catch the whole thing. Should have figured it had 759 in it!

No, I have no idea about that.

Did the NEW INSTALLATION TEST run to completion for you?

Good point about the 759 (= SKY).  I wondered why they chose that particular number Smile.

Let me know how you get on.

Cheers,
Grant.

Hi John, Grant

Thanks for your input, I'm just out of Chch in Rolleston and have broadband with Ihug but nothings changed recently and I've definitely not bought any PPV movies etc.

On Sunday I just started noticing the flashing green light and I remembered I'd read your post on Geekzone.

I will try what Grant suggested tonight and see if it still dials in at around 10pm.

Cheers
Reon

Hi Reon and John,

I've got news this morning and it's all bad...Frown

The MySky box here has started doing exactly what you guys are experiencing.

Every 4 hours (starting at 1am, 5am and right now after 9am) it is repeatedly dialling a number which is always busy.

It seems like Sky have changed the 0800 number used by MkSky in a recent software update.  Now it looks like everybody's MkSky box is phoning home at the same time and of course none of them can get through.

I think I will have to disconnect my phone line again because this is really annoying Yell.

Maybe Cyril7 knows how to solve this problem???

Funny I am currently in the middle of designing a product for the power industry that optionally can dailup, or connect via GPRS or Ethernet (via customers broadband) to report various info. A firmware (in assembler) module I have just been working on was a scehdular to do the dialup or for GPRS/Ethernet ever few days to close any TCP connections and reopen them to ensure clean operation in the event of connections getting lost.

One of the issues was how to get all these remote devices not to all dialup or crowd the stack of the internet server for new connections all at the same instant. Not hard to do, just SMOP, (small matter of programming). Sounds like Sky need to do the same.

I cannot remember if there are any options in the installer menu of the MySky to disable it. Other than that, if you disconnect the line I assume the modem can detect if it has no line to loop (well my application can) if there is no line volts present then it wont attempt to loop and dial. This is there mainly to stop it dialing when someone is on the line. This would be what I would do for now, and let Sky sort it out, I guess they must be well aware of the problem and have a fix in mind, Mania?

Dont forget according to Skys annual report there are some 9000 MySkys in service. And it may also be that standard STBs are doing the same, just there is no led to tell you somits up. So there could be 600,000 devices attempting to dial probably a 30 line modem stack.

Cheers
Cyril

Just checked at 2pm, and mine is still dialling.

Yes, Cyril, unplugging the phone line does stop it from dialling out, but it also causes the light to flash more annoyingly. Besides, if it is 300,000 STB's contending for 30 modems, it will get through eventually - like 12.6 years! Surprised

Yes, I was thinking that too. Did that on a caller id phone a few years ago. Every time I dialled into my isp, it thought I missed a call, and sent a light flashing.

Just had a look at the Installer Menu, don't think I'll muck around with it.

BUT just wondering one thing, I've got a recorded program on my Planner list that won't delete!

When you have it highlighted only the yellow delete icon appears at the bottom NOT the blue Keep or Red Playlist icons like on every other program and when you press the i button it says Used 0%, I've tried rebooting the unit also but its still there.

In the Installer Menu I noticed a Full System Reset.

Does anyone know if doing this will fix my issue but more importantly will it screw up important settings if run??

Cheers

Don't do anything on the installer menu unless specifically instructed to do so by a knowledgeable person. You could end up requiring a visit by a tech.

Since Grant is now reporting the same problem, it is clear the New Installation option doesn't help, so I won't be doing that. Besides, I think the tech did that when he was here.

Harking back to an old debate, I am now glad I don't own the box I paid $600 for. In the UK, I would have paid 50 quid for the tech visit.

I noticed at 0515 this morning that MY Sky was also trying to phone home so out of curiosity listened across the line. Yes, it was the "overloaded" message. Just phone Sky Customer Services where the Technical Advice woman basically told me that I was "talking through a hole in my head" and that the My Sky decoders never phone home. She talked to her supervisor who said that they had never heard of such a problem
