I bought the ST50 recently but returned it. Despite reviews saying it had a brighter picture and filters to reduce incoming light etc, I found it unwatchable during the day and early evening(it was great late though). I have light coming from the side also which possibly defeated the filter making the picture extremely washed out. I had read many reviews before choosing the Panny but went back to a Samsung LED. Also if you ever watch AVIs,MP4s and MKVs via the usb the Panny is way behind Samsung imo.

So I bought the P42ST50Z. Overall very impressed with the picture. The default settings are no good for a bright room. I had to turn on the "Eco" setting which automatically brightened the screen during the day. I also played with a few other settings that I found here http://www.hdtvtest.co.uk/news/panasonic-tx-p42st50b-p42st50-201203191731.htm?page=Calibration and the picture produced is outstanding. However it really should just work out of the box without any calibration needed.

Actually - the reason it doesn't...
Is everyone runs different sources, has different ambient lighting / direct sunlight to deal with + people will often put the sets at varying heights and sit off-axis etc.
There's a happy medium that comes out the box, people can tweak from there...

I've been offered a 55" VT50 for $3080. Going to be hard to turn down. Is it that much better than the ST50?

Special deal through my wife's work. They do work for one of the electrical retailers.
