stuzzo: I suspect almost all current TVs at retail, including Plasmas, will fall within the new standards. Manufacturers are normally fairly well ahead of mandated limits, if experience overseas applies here.

What I've noticed is that TVs now come fairly well optimized for power efficiency out of the box, whereas, five or so years ago you could dramatically change a TVs power consumption by adjusting such things as back light and mode setting.

Perhaps not some of the 'house' no name brands that some retailers import.

On the subject of light bulbs; we've got four light dimmers in our house, so CFL or LED bulbs are not an option on these circuits. I'm all for saving money on my electricity bill as much as I can.

So you are using bayonet halogens at present? Drop in replacement for standard incandescent @30% energy saving.

Err I was under the impression that many LEDs were dimmer compatible

I've got CFLs with dimmers. They cost about $20 each..

FYI: You can get dimmable CFLs and LEDs

And back on topic. Is this new standard being/been driven by any EU standard? As it's unlikely we're ahead of the game here and pushing manufacturers to meet our regulations (market size et el..)

I do wish these Govt. agencies would do their research before coming out with figures based on outdated information.? Power costs since August have risen to 30+ c/kWh which is a huge increase on 20.

I pay 21.66c/kwh with Meridian. I'm not counting the daily charge, as that's paid regardless of usage. If you pay 30c/kwh I have a bridge I'd like to sell you.

23.something for me.

IMO this is insane that they are mandating standards for these things. Whats next? Passing a law against me having a patio heater since they are inefficiant? Slippery slope and all that.

I've got CFLs with dimmers. They cost about $20 each..

And ugly as hell with a purple tint at low brightnesses and wont start up at low brightnesses.

Is your 21.66c/kWh including GST?

My latest power bill shows a rate of 29.307c/kWh + 0.158c/kWh Electricity Industry Levy, all +GST, less the prompt payment discount if you pay on time.

Making almost 34c/kWh if you pay late, or 26.4c/kWh if you don't.

I knew our rates in the Far North were expensive, but that just shows up how much Top Energy (our local lines company) is ripping us off. I've compared all electricity retailers available to us, and the above charges are the best for our particular usage pattern.

I'm just about to buy a new TV, and have been tossing up whether to go Plasma or LCD. I think another nail just got hammered into the Plasma coffin...

You can bypass the dimmers in the switch, so the switches no longer dim.

Regarding electricity prices, I see in Australia they are looking at privatizing their electricity, and they are promoting that it wll save people about $250 per year. They may not have seen what has happened in NZ, when we were also sold that line, but it didn't happen, as we are paying more and more for power every year with privatisation.

Ummmm....how do you conclude that privatisation is responsible for our current prices? We pretty we haven't privatised electricity here. The three main generators (circa 75% of generation capacity and most of the retail market) and the national grid are all still government owned.
