I brought a sony CRT TV from the UK to NZ.

Getting it tuned in was easy, just change the audio carrier from I to B/G.

But the Polarity thing is 100% true. The TV engineer who tried to fix mine said it was one of the worst cases he'd seen but it happens.

Colour purity was severly messed up for about 1/3rd of the screen.

You can fix it (supposedly) bu removing the tube and replacing it the other way up. I didnt bother. Just bought a plasma on 2 years intrest free..:D

Its now sat in the garage if anyone wants to verify the truth of it, or even just cart it away..

I know it is comparing CRT to LCD/Plasma, but RobDickinson, in your opinion, what's your thought of bringing a tv (be it CRT or LCD or Plasma) across half of the globe, where one may have more spending power being UK Pound to NZ Dollar to buy quite a late model of TV relatively cheap?

Personaly I wouldnt buy new in the UK just to ship it to NZ, no warrenty, chance of damage (high with plasma) etc.

I shipped mine because I owned it already & was shifting a 20ft container anyhow.

Price wise IMO its not too bad here given the exchange rate, working in lower earnings it gets less afordable here though. Also models take more time to filter down. UK buyers get better choice and value overall. enough to buy & ship? not for me.

I bought a $5k Pany plasma (42/600) because the base model was a SD set, since then they brought out an intermediate evrsion for about $3,700 I think.

In the UK this generation Panasonic have NO SD sets, there all HD, cheapest 42 is about 1100 quid, or $3k. That has built in freeview tuners etc too.

Thanks Rob, good reason to buy locally for both warranty and the internal construction of the intended market. Obviously, for UK models, it have some internal component better suited for that part of the globe like FreeView tuner...

I standby my suggestion to the OP that it is best to buy it locally in NZ, instead of shipping one from UK.

I agree with you on the point of buying locally. However, as the OP said, they will be shipping a household full of stuff, so throwing the TV in the container won't make much difference. If it works here (which it should), then great. If it doesn't, it won't have cost him anything. He can then use that TV while he researches LCD TVs available here.

Mate the bloke was asking if its worth buying new in the UK. IMo the answer is no, especialy for plasma.

Well Photoman and Rob, I think we have express our opinion, it will be up to the OP to decide. I just express my view on importing TV (or in fact electronic devices) into NZ... I have seen people importing computer (no, not laptop or such, computer like the case and monitor etc)... and washing machine, or fridge and I say, "THAT'S CRAZY!!!" It's not like you cannot get any of those here in NZ, but be realistic and strategically with moving/migration.

The answer in the end for the question like "Is it worth it?", to me (in my personal view) is... can you get them at the place you're moving to? If so, then probably not worth bringing, unless they're scarce and/or very expensive.

Sorry Rob, but did I miss something? I agreed with chiefie about buying locally, which is also what you recommend "Personaly I wouldnt buy new in the UK just to ship it to NZ, no warrenty, chance of damage (high with plasma) etc.". My only other comment was that he may as well bring his old TV with him, as it won't cost him anything. And yes, multiple posts are a pig to tidy up!

I would import some things now I'm here (and have) but typicaly stuff I dont expect to have warrenty issues with. I also didnt buy anything in the UK before I emigrated, didnt see the point. IMo tho AV/HiFi gear (amps, speakers, subs etc) in NZ is expensive and choice is limited, I def would have filled the container with that stuff if I needed extra.
