Dunnersfella: The Pioneer is pushing an awful THD figure... 1%!
The Kenwood was 0.06% (lower is better).
At the time, that was Pioneer's very lowest receiver, and it won't have improved with age...

i cant find the spec on the web but this listing seems to have it at 0.7% at 100w

Stereo Mode Power: 110 Watt @ 8 ohm, 20 Hz - 20 kHz, THD: 0.7%

farns: Whats 20w mean though for the Kenwood, I dont understand the THD spec, does that mean its only 0.6% THD up to 20w@8ohm output? Its total output is 60w x 2. The Pioneer is 1% at 100w@8ohm

Ive heard cheaper AV receivers arent as good for music as dedicated stereo ones, I thought they would just be the same SQ with beefier PSU and extra inputs and circuitry

But then I havent seen any low-end stereo receivers by Sony/Pioneer etc so maybe the market wasnt there at low-end vs all-in-one stack systems

Anyways Ill collect Friday and give this a try with the old JVC 100w grunters, hopefully I dont damage them

it means that at 60w it will sound crap but at 20w it should sound ok.

Ok this is what I have set up now, all old gear:

Speakers:
Pair of old JVC floor speakers, 8 Ohm 100w (200w peak) 25kg
http://www.nrpavs.co.nz/JVCSK-1000II.htm

Amp:
Sony 100w surround receiver 1993 STR-750P , low-mid range at the time afaik
http://www.docs.sony.com/release/HTDDW750.pdf

stereo mode is 90w x 2 @ 8 Ohm, 40Hz-20kHz, THD 0.7%

Disk-spinner:
Sony CD-player 5disk changer, CDP-CE525 , old but good spec afaik and sounds crisp/hifi, apparently good for a changer, digital optical out

VS

Kenwood all in one system 1995ish with 2 x 80w @ 8 Ohm speakers

Amp is model Kenwood A-58 60w x 2 @ 8 Ohm, but I dont think THD spec is very good

Anyway comparing the 2 sets of speakers plugged into the Sony amp , the surround receiver does have a bit more life to it and clearer at high volume than kenwood midi system, but the JVC speakers as I feared are a bit lacking in the highs even with equalizer on amp, just look at the pics of drivers, fantastic for bass (taut too) and all around better sound than the kenwood speakers but the tinkly extreme highs such as in classical music where someone "plays" the triangle are quieter than the cheapo Kenwoods.

The Kenwoods have bit muddier bass and sound balanced but not as lively if that makes sense.

Anyway so theres a cheapo system comparison, I may get one of those Onkyo 313 receivers (65w @ 8 Ohm) with HDMI and USB for kids playing their linkin park crap etc.

Do you think FLAC on a thumb drive plugged to Onkyo 313 would sound much better than 3.5mm->RCA into the Sony amp? Thats really the only point of changing amps at this stage, dont need to hook the LCD up to receiver as it already has active speakers (AV40s) but might later.
