Thats not the under $300 model the OP is talking about. The $299 model is HD Ready, not Full HD and doesn't specify the screen resolution but will be only 720p.

In any event, whether a VEON is a good buy depends not only on the quality/price angle, but also what sort of a budget you have and what you want to use it for. As a main set, I wouldn't touch it unless I was really cash strapped - as a living room TV is something that gets a lot of use and you want to ensure you get something decent. However, for secondary uses - bedroom TV, kitchen TV, kids bedroom TV, kids console use in a spare room etc - I might be prepared to take a punt on an off-brand unit even if I had plenty of cash.
I bought a VEON blu-ray on clearance for the spare room a few months ago. Haven't tried it yet, but the attraction was a very low price ($50!) and that it's one of the few units on the market that's apparently multi-zone out of the box for Blu Ray as well as for DVD. If it works then, as a secondary unit, it gives the option of safely buying disks from the US. Hooking it up is one of many items on my lengthening "to do" list over the Christmas break.

That appears to be very common among brand names that were reputable in days gone by. Teac and Sansui being the other examples I can think of - possibly Sanyo too?
One of the reasons I bought LG appliances when I moved into this place was because of their heart warranties, their 0800 support line, and I have seen them promptly and effectively deal to the very occasional complaint on their Facebook page. You don't get that sort of confidence if you're buying a product that's been imported by someone who doesn't have a commitment to building brand credibility and customer loyalty in the local market.
D1023319: FYI - was looking at 46inch Venon for $899
last year during a pre christmas sale i picked up a soniq 47" full 1080P tv with 2 or 3 hdmi inputs from jb hifi for $499. not a great brand, but they use samsung and lg panels (or two other big brands, i forget which), so the picture is brilliant, not the best ive seen (on $3000 tvs) but still very good and very cheap tv.
i picked up a 32" panasonic 720p tv from jb the other day for my son for $388 with 2 hdmi inputs. You see 32" tvs go for under $400 every once in a while, and was waiting for a brand name one to go under, hes only 4 so doesnt need super good tv, but wanted something to hang in his new bedroom when our house is finished.
also if you go to pricespy and type in the model number of a tv, you can get a price history to see how much they sold that tv for in the past (during sales), my plan is to wait for boxing day to see if jbhifi are selling in wall speakers cheap, and if they arent just take out a print out of their previous prices and hope they will sell the speakers at those prices (i need 2 sets, so would be buying 12 speakers)
