mattwnz: I often think it is false economy buying house or no name brands in teh long run. You possibily have less CGA protection, and often the features and quantity aren't up there with good brands, which often aren't much more. TVs are cheap as these days, so I don't think there is much excuse not to go for a sony, panasonic, samsung etc, especially as the boxing days specials are coming up.
Common sense is not as common as you think.

Thats not the under $300 model the OP is talking about.
The $299 model is HD Ready, not Full HD and doesn't specify the screen resolution but will be only 720p.

this is what people were saying when Samsung and LG first turned up, buy proper brands. Akai is a 80 year old Japanese company and have a good reputation in fact they were big in NZ years ago but for some reason they stopped selling in NZ

I was under the impression that Akai hasn't made anything for years, and now a marketing company that simply specialises in simply re-badging units made by a variety of third-party manufacturers?
D1023319: FYI - was looking at 46inch Venon for $899
