Just to add to other comments already, the existing 3D technology (as it is) is just marketing and pure push by industry group who just want to milk the money in, just look back to those Anaglyph 3D hype with promise of better immersive content.

Think of it as pop-up from 2D like you find from children's books.

If you do go down on the smart tv line, be sure to test the boot up time and the latency when switching channels (or any command for that matter). I've seen smart tv's that take longer than the warm up time of old CRT TV's which can be just downright annoying. You may not think this is an issue initially but I've personally known people who threw out their tv's simply because they could not bear on waiting for their TV to finish the boot cycle.

Check what inputs you might be using if you don't have a amp/switch
Make sure wifi is certified as N standard, streaming high def content over G is possible but I wouldn't recommend on that.
Stay away from plasma unless you know what you are doing. Otherwise you'll end up with a large heater in your room. I'd say a large majority of LED tv's have decent contrast ratio and brightness, check the black levels if you are concerned.

xlinknz: Agreed - Well it is now very tempting to minimise investment than paying for 'features' that that will get negliable use, that said any 50" under $1000 will be 720p.

A year ago maybe, but there have been plenty of Full HD panels under $1000 in the sales.

Most of the stuff under $700 is still 1024 x 768 with even a handful of low cost 1024 x 768 5)" panels now appearing, but Full HD is becoming more and more common even at the low end.

I tend to agree. It seems that the TV companies are almost deperate to find 'features' such as 3D and Smart TV technology  to bait consumers to buy new TVs on a regular basis. In regards to some features I may want it is almost like cars - to have stability control one must buy the GLX or top of the range models lol

I'm in no rush as Wgtn doesn't go Digitial until Sept and I'm sure the retailers will be having lots of sales at that time and of course lots of new models will be available and current ones at close out prices. TVs appear to definately suffer the law of deminishing returns. What is top of the range now will probablu be half price in 6 months...
