He thinks he has one but if not then it will only come in at about $100 more than the prebuilt but will have 4TB more storage, an SSD and better cooling. He doesn't need a tuner or bluray so this build is better suited for him.
I'd recommend cheaper RAM and cheaper MB for an HTPC. If the reason that you want faster ram/mobo is for gaming then your choice of the intel onboard gpu is wrong, as the amd onboard gpus are better for gaming. If you are not doing gaming then go for cheaper RAM/Mobo. I'd recommend getting 8GB of cheaper value RAM for the same price as the 4GB of HyperX RAM.
I have the silverstone GD07B it's a really nice case, lots of room, I plan to eventually have around 12TB of storage in it.
Thanks for the reply. With regard to SSD, I have a 64GB SSD on my HTPC at home. All I have on it is OS plus just the software I need for the htpc which is a handful of small programs. It is just over half full. Since this build will be a dedicated media pc too, it should be OK in my experience. My htpc has a separate 3.5" for tv and others for storage. This one will have all storage on separate 3.5"s too
Do you think an htpc that is strictly used for video/audio playback needs 8GB of RAM? Isn't 4 plenty?
64gb should be enough, but I like a bit of overhead. If you run MCE with mediabrowser the metadata is kept with the media, if you run something like MePo then the metadata is stored in the OS drive, so it can potentially add up. 64GB should be fine though, especially if you're only running MCE. The cost between 64GB and 128GB is significant so if your trying to keep costs down get 64GB, however if that is the case why are you spending $250 total on the remote and getting an expensive htpc case.
You can argue that 4GB is enough, however the cost difference between 4GB and 8GB is probably ~$30. If you are using onboard GPU with 512mb allocated, this leaves you with 3.5GB for Win7. This is probably ok, but if you leave your HTPC on all the time and you have a slight memory leak then it can make the HTPC run sluggish. Having 8GB also gives you the option to timeshift to a RAM drive. Given the price difference between 4GB and 8GB is an extra 2% total cost I would recommend 8GB.
