custom firmware changes the look, you still have to create the meta data. There maybe alternatives to thumbgen, i had a temporary wdtv gen3 while my HTPC was down for a couple of months. If you have more than 200 movies then navigation is slow and it's better to navigate by plain file view.

you might also like to look at the roku devices that run plex, you can buy them from amazon or another US store and use nzpost's youshop to ship them.

Amazon will ship the Roku directly to NZ for about US$18-19. Delivery in about 10-14 days from order.

I have a Popcorn Hour, and it's great - I have actually had 3 of them, and have upgraded. The feature list has just gotten better and better each time!

I actually would suggest avoiding roku if you are playing mostly local media, as it generally falls short compared to the other standalone players in terms of codec support + high bitrate video quality. Yes popcorn hour seems pretty awesome. Nothing beats WDTV interms of codec support + price + quality, however it's metadata organisation + browsing speed is horrid.
