With this one if i played something through my TV such as from a USB stick, or the sky box can I still record on the HDD (or DVD ?)

Recording while watching from USB stick - Not all files.
According to the manual you can't playback DivX or MKV files while recording. Looks like mp4 and mpeg2 are OK.
From the Skybox yes, as it will be via the AV input, not USB. Normally though you would connect Sky to your TV as well as the Recorder and watch Sky via the TV connection.
You could always plug the USB stick into the TV and watch as long as the TV will play the file format.
You can also watch files on your PC as the unit has built in WiFi networking and DNLA.

Not sure if it has changed but Panasonic used to be not so good at playing all file types if inserting USB stick or external HDD into it.

Nothing has changed. The USB socket is really only of any use for an external HDD which must be registered to the one unit and then won't work on a PC or another Panasonic unit.
USB input plays - AVCHD,DivX,MP4,JPEG,MPEG2,MP3,MKV, and some MPEG2 needs to be copied to HDD first.
DLNA playback is the same.
That's why I have an A C Ryan media Player.
The WiFi Network is the most useful tool as it allows transfer of files to a PC for editing, viewing and storage using a DLNA server.

They're down to $699 now at JB HiFi. I doubt they'll get any cheaper.

Excuse the ignorance but what is the difference between the 720 and this http://www.noelleeming.co.nz/shop/tvs-dvds/dvd-video/blu-ray-players/panasonic-dmr-pwt530gz-blu-ray-player-hdd-recorder-with-twin-hd-tune/prod122279.html the 530. Is it the ability to burn blu-ray with the 720 and other than that they are pretty much the same ?

The 530 has a yet to be released feature that could make it quite compelling over the 720.
Remote recording (like MySky) when you are away from home with your android/iOS device.

The service is supposedly coming this month.

Seems a bit weird when u compare the two that he 720 does not have live pause but the 530 does. Thought they both would have that.

SO i've done some research and even though i cant find the manuals the only item i cannot get consistent feedback on is the ability for the 530 to stream to an iOS device. The 835 does, but it seems according to some websites the 530 can and others it can't.

Any owners able to give me the answer ?

The 530 is only just on the market and they haven't posted the manual for it. Therefore I'd look at the UK and just keep in mind that there could be some fundamental differences.

Any store that has one opened on their shelve will have the manual available, so when you are up to speed and have picked over the differences, ask the store to flick through the printed manual and you'll no doubt be able to make a decision on the spot.

The 720 does have live pause (called Live Rewind) up to 1.5 hours.
Quite often we start watching a program that started recording 1/2 an hour or so earlier while we were watching something else.

As far as I can tell from the Panasonic comparison chart, the 530 handles far fewer record modes, has smaller HDD, and can't record from an external source. In fact IMO it's much less versatile and pretty useless compared to the 720 and 835.

I know what you're saying but I can get the 530GZ for $549 whereas the 720 is $699 and the 835 $849. I really dont need the BR/DVD record function, but want all the fruit that comes with the higher specced models.

IMO the 720 is worth the extra cash. The 835 will most likely drop in price in a few months time. The 720 has nearly hit rock bottom. I paid $650 for mine.

Can you stream to an iPad with the 720? Also does it have a browser built in ? Want to watch (or record) EPL once tcom get it, cheers
