I used to find that the biggest problem playing a DVD on a PC vs an appliance DVD player is the total freakout the PC has with repeated read attempts in the event of an error. A decent player like the one they use in store to test on, when you bring the disc in to complain, will just truck on through with little to no disruption to playback.
