I believe what you are proposing to do is in violation of Sky's T&C's

1.4
SKY Equipment:
All and any equipment provided by SKY (whether directly or indirectly) and installed at the SUD including the Smart Card, the Decoder and the Antenna System.
9.
BAILMENT OF SKY EQUIPMENT
9.1
Ownership of the SKY Equipment will at all times remain with SKY and the Subscriber must not:
(a)
remove the SKY Equipment from the SUD without the prior written consent of SKY;
(b)
sell, lease, dispose of, lend or otherwise part with possession of, or modify in any way, the SKY Equipment;
(c)
use the SKY Equipment for any purpose other than viewing the Selected Service, or using any other programming, products or services selected in accordance with clause 5, in the SUD in accordance with the terms of this agreement;
(d)
deface, obliterate or remove any label or mark which identifies the ownership of the SKY Equipment; or
(e)
do any other act which may adversely affect or prejudice the ownership of the SKY Equipment by SKY.

And if I move into an apartment with a F connector on the wall and no dealings with sky whatsoever, that agreement means nothing to me since its not with me.

Chances are the dish isn't skys, the splitters aren't etc,

If my flatmates move out, I will use their old sky dish, once again, nothing that sky can do other then ask me to come and get it when I can simply say no, since they have no agreement with me for property access.

My current set up is a sky dish on the roof to an APP 2 way splitter. One cable goes back up to the Sky upstairs, and one goes to my FTA downstairs.

Indicates he/she is a Sky subscriber and thus in violation of their T&C'c

Actually, i am a sky subscriber, but through the motorhomes division. I do have a sky dish on the roof, as well as 2 others. The sky dish was for the previous tenants sky, and i even requested that sky remove the dish but they dont, as it would cost them more to remove their $7 junk dish than to leave it there.

As a Motorhomes division Sky Subscriber, i have to supply my own dish, which i do in my truck, and when i bring it inside the building i use the sky dish that they will not remove... why should i not?

Sky are rumoured to move to Hpol early next month. They have to, quite simply the Vpol transponders on D1 that they are now using are maxed out, they can not take up the extra capacity they want (for more channels and HD) without moving to Hpol as its on Hpol that all the NZ spot beam capaicty sits. If they increase there capacity by using a mix of pols then all multi tuner installs (ie MDU, dual STBs or MySkys) will require a dual output LNB and if more than two tuners multiswitches and extra cabling to be installed. This would all cost, but why do it when all the capacity they signed up for is sitting waiting to be used on Hpol.

Once they move to Hpol the issue of operating a FreeView STB and Sky boxs off the same single output LNB will become a non event.

The only reason Sky have not moved is that there currrent STB software is hard programed at boot up to go to 12519Vpol, once there setup tables tell the STB where to find all the transponders (H or Vpol) but for the current firmware to boot and go to Hpol is not possible. Once the firmware is updated (early next month) then this issue will be resolved, and Sky will migrate to Hpol.

There was a media release a month of two back where they indicated they would be going to Hpol early next month once there software had been updated.

The freeview thing might have a positive spin off for Sky. One of my relatives has just signed up to Sky as he has built a house and there is no clear UHF/VHF coverage. He is installing Sky and will pay the $99 install plus the 12 months minimum subscription then switch to freeview. This was also our intention when we built also. The 12 months has come and gone for us and we haven't cancelled our Sky subscription. There would be a mutiny if we did!

It is certainly an economic way of getting a dish and wiring into your home with a sky install. I am sure Sky is aware it goes on that FTA STB's are being used on their equipment and although outside their T and C's probably the majority of people doing it also maintain a sky subscription.

In a NZ Herald report a couple of months ago John Fellet (Sky CEO) said that for people to connect a FreeView STB in addition to their Sky STB to a Sky owned dish was technically against their T&C, however they were not going to make an issue of it. However if a installer or home owner did something to the installation (in an effort to install a FreeView STB) and the Sky box stopped working then Sky would naturally want to bill the subscriber to set it right. Which I think is a pretty reasonable stance.

With multi room and mysky if I try to go to channel 888 on the second decoder get blue box in middle of screen with message "service is unavailable. Select another channel" Be on phone if get that message when they move everything to H-POL.

thanks for your good explaination Cyril.

I somehow managed to break the Sky by stuffing about with it, but used my usual trick of unplugging the STB to reset it.

Also makes sense about capacity of vpol being maxxed out, was surprised they didn't add more channels once they moveed over to D1

By theway if you note on the freeview site now that its up and running. In the FAQ near the very bottom is a question can I use both my FreeView and Sky STB on the same dish. After explaining how you can only use one at a time due to the different pols of the two services it then notes that Sky will move to Vpol early next month.

No both boxes are on, just it sounded like H would overrule V, not clash with each other. I think the my sky box controls dish as if I turn it off the other box loses signal. i.e. it has the atmospheric conditions sign. Channel 888 is not available on mysky so can't try it with that box.

Sounds like they have used a single port power pass splitter so the second box isn't powering the dish, or else there is a short or break on the cable to the second box from the splitter. I don't recall any options to turn off the lnb power on sky boxes, but I didn't look that hard at it, the only one I know where it is from excessive use of it is the local oscillator settings ;)
