I have never heard of macrovision being applied to RGB VGA cables.
The benifit of using HDMI is you can get it to transport component video which will signifigantly reduce banding in the darker areas and will also have less quantisation errors.
It might be some form the dynamic range of the image changing and the TV trying to match, I had a projector that did that over VGA, put a dim photo up and it would then stretch the levels out to full scale making it wash out shadow details. There was some buryed option to turn it off and it was better, but it still had massive crush at the white end when using VGA.
As for the seller saying their DVI to HDMI cable wont work for computer to tv, probably sick of people putting it into a PC outputting PC resolutions into a TV that doesnt want to take them calling the cable faulty.
