Regs: My personal favourite is Stereo World in Dominion Road - the guys there are always good to sharpen their pencils if the opportunity presents.

Yeah, I've had good experiences there too.

Another good place is Mt Albert Radio & TV in New North Road. I've phoned around on several occasions to get prices, and they have come up trumps on many occasions.

Magness Benrow in Great South Road Greenlane is also excellent regarding service and prices.

i dont think this would happen unfourtently.. Harvey norman are a Aus/Nz store but they wouldnt want to give you australian prices.. theres also the new JB Hifi store in aucks..

If JB HiFi can do to the NZ market what they have done in the Australian markerplace it's going to be a win win for consumers. I believe their emphasis in the NZ marketplace isn't going to be in TV's and Home Theatre equipment at this stage however.

I'm glad to say all the retailers mentioned are my regular stops, very pleasantly surprised with Magness Benrow in Greenlane.
Best discount I've got is about 20- 22 % in Auckland for a TV. Has anyone done better ?

On Opalia.com.au a 46" Sammy M81 has got a retail of AUD 5499, they sell for AU$ 3754.44, 32% off !!!!!! (NZD including GST diff $4276)

Still the NZ retail is a lot higher than o'seas, retail on same TV in Ak is NZ$6999, less 20% is $5599. If we didn't pay for freight a difference of $1323, even if I paid $450.00 in freight and insurance I would save $873. Sadly no reciprical warranty so don't think I will

Panasonic Plasma prices seem to be cheaper in NZ ?

Do we just get ripped on LCD's ?

Notice that Aussie has heaps more brands more competition ?

Maybe we are getting the Oil company shaft of a few years ago ?

Perhaps the turnover is a lot higher in Australia because they have additional drivers like HD televsion and DVB-T broadcasts... if their turnover is higher then they are likely to be holding less stock bought at the more expensive prices when the $AUD was weaker.

The companies here may be needing to sell stock they bought 4 months ago when the $NZD bought 10% less $USD than it does currently.

AU$2989 for the Pana 50" on shop.bot.com.au

They do turn over more, but everything is relative, I would assume oz would still be aiming for X weeks of inventory as well as x amount of forex cover. I wouldn't think it would be hugely different. I do a bit of forex trading and the NZD and AUD against the USD and I think Yen are at all time highs. Still reckon we're getting the red hot poker !

Are you comparing apples with apples? i.e. is that the exact same model in both markets and are you quoting prices from identical types of suppliers (like harvey norman aus vs harvey norman nz, instead of cheaplittlesupplier.com.au vs bond and bond nz)

Or is the AU model shipping with DVBT tuner only and the NZ model shipping with analog tuner, for example. ?

Looking at the comparison between those two websites the difference in prices isnt as large as indicated...

Perhaps the ANALOG tuner costs more than the DIGITAL tuner due to extra circuitry to convert the signal?

Comparing same models in NZ and Australia

Aust RRP $18699.

The two 50" compared above are different The aust model is 1080i The NZ model is 1080p.

The models I were comparing where the 2 that have the URL's above. Aussie model has built in DVB-T + analogue tuners vs the analogue only in NZ and the retail price is A$2999 at two retailers I was looking at yesterday (JB HiFi and Harvey Norman).

This isn't necessarily a huge difference when you look at the difference in the $. The most obvious is the $3000 difference between the Series 7 Pioneer 50" which is the exact same model as NZ and sells for A$4500 retail here in oz vs NZ$7500 in NZ. Monaco Corp must be making a killing.

Both are 1080p capable.

It's a moot point anyway since it's only a 1366x768 screen so can't display full 1080p it has to downscale it. If you want true 1080 you need to buy a full HD 1920x1080 screen.

re my earlier statement about Panasonic Plasmas, I did say I didn't think there was much difference in price nz$4699, less 20%is $3752, AUD2999 +2.5% GST differential, x/rate 0.90 = NZD 3415. We're $337 more, haven't checked out specs.

Re my earlier statement that LCD seems more expensive here, think that the 46" Sony X series is comparing apples. NZD 1394 comparing retail prices and taking into account 2.5 GST diff and x/rate.

Now about the retailers I couldn't care less whether the place I buy from is a mail order company or Noel leeming, after I decide what I want I want the best price, no ifs, no buts.
