Echoing others here - I have a NUC running openelec controlled with a logitech harmony one and its brilliant, the wife uses it no issue.
That said have also just added a fire TV into the mix for testing and have to say the nuc may well be gone soon its that good (plus cheap - 1/3 the price of the nuc)
My setup (and WAF is important, otherwise it'd be a lot more geeky!):
Samsung LED, SmartTV, Wired. MySkyHDi AppleTV, Wired - UnblockUS DNS, Netflix subscription. Optical Switch (TV Optical Out and AppleTV Optical Out connected) Apple Airport Express, Wired Bose Lifestyle HomeTheatre AV System Plex Server running on my Desktop PC in spare room/Office - Wired Logitech Harmony Remote (most important piece of kit IMO).
The remote has the following Activities: Watch TV - Turn on TV to HDMI1, MySky On, Bose set to TV in - Remote Volume controls Bose, Remote Channel/Numbers etc control MySky - TV just a monitor really. Watch DVD - Turn on TB to AV In, Bose to DVD. (Cannot remember last time I used this actually, but I think the Wife has played the odd fitness video :/) Watch Plex - TV On, Smart Button Pushed (wish I could get it to select and Open Plex, but meh), Bose to Optical In Watch AppleTV - TV On, HDMI2, Bose to Optical - both harmony remote and Apple Remote App can control. Listen to CDs - Bose to CD Listen to iTunes - Bose to Aux in. Use iPhone/iPad remote app to control music from iTunes library or directly off iPhone.
This works without a hitch, and WAF is very high (she has even recommended AppleTV/Netflix to others - not her style usually).
I am going to get a FireTV for the bedroom TV, that way I can have Netflix and Plex in the bedroom. I'd happily get rid of Sky, but out housemate wants to keep it, and he is paying for half of it. In that case, I'd get a Freeview Recorder for recording (probably a Panasonic, to include Bluray).
