Fossie: Do you think they will increase the bandwidth on the FTA channels? (If they don't take the freeview feeds)

Personally I very much doubt it. It would be very interesting to compare their TV3 and C4 bitrates with the freeview ones.

The most sensible thing would be for Sky to simply show the freeview versions of 1-4 + Maori, which would free up considerable bandwidth for new channels, but freeview might not let them.

Will the shift allow those on freeview to receive Prime also, or is that classed as paytv also? Be nice to get prime also

Sky don't seem to want to add Prime to the Freeview platform. IMHO it just shows are dumb Sky TV are - they consider it a FTA channel yet in a years time when DVB-T is launched and people are buying TV's with DVB-T tuners built in people aren't going to care about watching a crap analogue Prime TV broadcase when they can be watching all the other FTA channels in proper widescreen with HD programming. If Prime doesn't move to Freeview the channel has no future.

I was wondering the same thing Rollux. From what I could see on Lyngsat, it looks like it is being videoguard encrypted at the moment. Will be interesting to see what sky does with prime.

Sky have states that Prime will be available FTA on Terrestrial, but not on Satellite. They are also planning on moving the channel to HD on Terrestrial.

I understand the problem with Prime is due to them being the free to air broadcast partner for Super 14 and Tri Nations. I think because it's theoretically possbible for these feeds to be received outside of NZ, they would be in breach of contract for broadcasting their signal unencrypted. That is why channels like the Australia Network (formerly ABC Asia Pacific) have to encrypt their S14 broadcasts. I think this is why they're only going to be broadcasting on DVB-T

So how does TV3 get away with broadcasting the Rugby World Cup live and unencrypted over FTA Satellite? And likewise TVNZ with VB Supercars, Americas Cup etc...

I just spoke to Prime to see if I could get them to send me the SKY Decoder which would just tune in Prime by itself -http://www.primetv.co.nz/default.asp?t=5 - apprently the decoder rental is free if you are out of coverage area. Unfortunately my area, Mt Eden, is within th UHF coverage area so I didnt qualify and have to tune in via UHF :(

ryone is forgetting is that TV3 own the free to air rights and also paid for exclusive rights to the live showing of games, Prime only own's the rights to show replay's of S14 games within NZ, the only reason they can show them on prime via satellite is because it is encrypted, with TV1 it own's the rights to V8's unencrypted only in NZ. e.t.c.

There is a multi level of rights, and TV3 had to pay for 2, just so they could show the games on F.T.A.

I aim to misbehave.

Why would purchasing live versus replay rights have anything to do with encrypted/uncrypted broadcasting over satellite? One argument was that the signal may be able to be tuned in overseas thus affecting the rights - this would apply equally to the Rugby World Cup, V8 Supercars and S14 regardless of whether it was live broadcasts or replay broadcasts...

Received a letter from Sky yesterday, confirming they will be moving to hpol next Tuesday as planned.

They stated in the letter there will be a service outage between 2am and 6am (I think that's correct)

There seems to be a bug in the forum code that appends the link to the gz url, if you edit the post and check the source with the html editor it has the correct link href so I suspect its a problem with the forum code, will notify MF.
