I used rasplex for about 6 months with a Logitech keyboard to control things.
Connected to synology NAS via Ethernet.

Pretty much seamless and passed wife factor.
Video was just DVD resolution as I didn't rip my blue rays.

Couple of caveats.
I couldn't get pi to output AC3 to my home theatre AMP or tv. Might be fixed with new versions.

I changed to a NUC htpc as wanted to Netflix via VPN and needed Windows for weather station software.

Other than AC3 issue I was happy.

A.

I have a Raspberry Pi and I've tried Rasplex - which is pretty damn good considering what it's running on.

I think I'm going to get a Fire TV in preference to dedicating the Raspberry Pi to media centre duties, mostly because I like the idea of having a dedicated remote. The Pi is cheap, but not that much cheaper once you have factored in a case, a PSU, and a keyboard - and I'm really not sold on having a keyboard hanging around purely to step through lists of Plex items.

There's always HDMICEC for remote operation via the TV's remote, but I haven't had any luck getting that going yet.

I've had a play with Plex (on Ubuntu) and the Roku client this weekend.  It's all pretty smooth and fits in well with the rest of the Roku experience.
