Just a short-lived gimmick IMO.

Whilst not directly related to this thread, I thought I'd mention that whilst I felt that 3D fell in the same heap (hype and little practical use), recently I upgraded my home theatre projector and whilst looking, auditioned 3 models in the 5K+ price range. The 3D on those, the Sony (Which I bought and LOVE), the Panasonic and the JVC (amazing) was literally breath taking.

My wife, a self professed neophyte and who has little or no interest in my gadget lovery, was utterly taken aback and now we watch whatever we can in 3D.

First Gen 3d wasn't anything to write home about, and I will admit to being openly derisive about 3D in general, and even though curved screens are of interest to me, and whilst I wouldn't buy one now, I'll wait and see.

Other than a very quick demo, I've never watched 3D TV. I decided a while back to not watch any movies at the cinema in 3D again, as it always screws my vision up. I find I had to take the glasses off half way through to give my eyes a rest from it. I realise that TV and cinema 3D use different technologies.

I actually don't like the inputs in a separate box as the Samsung.

Fair enough. It's the first TV that I've seen with this arrangement. No idea if it will prove to be a popular idea.

It's a nice concept... but the practicality of having to run the cable through the wall for on-wall installations does not appeal, nor does the short run of cable that comes with it for such applications. Upgradable connectivity on the back of the TV makes sense (in the lower Samsung models), but an international standard for such things will most likely never happen...

Didn't Samsung start doing this with their first 4k screens so as to be able to just upgrade the 'input box' from a HDMI 1.4 box to a HDMI 2.0 box when the standard was settled?

I also received a Samsung Soundbar... Installed it today and it does indeed make a huge difference in sound quality. Instead of sending the HDMI to TV you first pass it through the sound bar, which will filter out the sound passing video only to the TV.

The photo below you won't see the Samsung TV yet - unfortunately it seems the last reviewer didn't put the screws in the box so I can't actually get the TV attached to the base.

The Soundbar comes with a subwoofer and can be managed via Bluetooth as well.

While I've never had this configuration, the proliferation of devices in my living room (that changes regularly enough) makes cable management an issue for my wall mounted TV. Because I like to tinker, currently there in a XBox, a PlayonHD, an HTPC, and a Tivo. I can see a Bluray player coming in the not too distant future which would demand an HDMI that I don't have, so the XBox might be downgraded to a component cable. For me the idea of short cables to a box in the cabinet that the other gear sits in/on sounds brilliant.

There's no reason (that I can think of) why Samsung couldn't provide a longer cable if required. I presume that it's a proprietary connection? The one in JB was plugged in, so I couldn't exactly pull it out for a looksee.
