madcircle: hi guys, does anyone know if you can have 2 callerid devices on one line or can one device catch the information before the other?
The caller id information is sent from the exchange between the first and second rings. It's 'read-only' so anything watching the line - caller id boxes, caller id phones, modems etc can read it at the same time. I have 3 caller id phones and a modem which all see the data. The limit will be whatever load these devices place on the line, which is likely to be minimal. There is a concept of 'REN' (ringing equivalence number(?)) which attempts to quantify this, and is more concerned with the power supplied by the exchange for ringing the bells, if there are any phones around that still have them!
