The caller id information is sent from the exchange between the first and second rings. It's 'read-only' so anything watching the line - caller id boxes, caller id phones, modems etc can read it at the same time. I have 3 caller id phones and a modem which all see the data. The limit will be whatever load these devices place on the line, which is likely to be minimal. There is a concept of 'REN' (ringing equivalence number(?)) which attempts to quantify this, and is more concerned with the power supplied by the exchange for ringing the bells, if there are any phones around that still have them! -Ken
Hey all... I too spent ages trying to find such a modem. And after months of searching I found one that works GREAT... and only $15 new. The guys at morning computer will see you right. They were so cheap I bought 2, 1 for a spare.
I will have to see if I still have the box around somewhere, it was a no name brand box from memory. I've just called them and will have to call them back in 10mins so if they say yes they have them I'll post the model they quote.
