I don't understand why TVNZ do things like this. They are hardly losing any revenue.

Do you really want Sky to rebroadcast those new Freeview channels and the send them back compressed to hell just like most of their other channels. Some of them must be just over 2Mbits..

DS9:
Hi, what I do not understand is that TVNZ 6+7 will be advert free and be the portal for Government specified content, yet TVNZ can stop 700,000 Sky customers from seeing that content, without buying another decoder. I would like to know the legality of this, as TVNZ is a state broadcaster as well as a profit driven company.

Sky at the moment can carry the existing FTA channels for no charge, where as it pays for the rights to carry a lot of its other content. The newer digital channels aren't automatically available for Sky.

On the other hand freeview can't carry Sky's FTA channel Prime for free, because they have no equivalent rights.

Ideally TVNZ would provide Sky with 6+7 and Sky should provide freeview with Prime. Then we would all be happy.

Sky wont nessecarily rebroadcast them, just point the STB at the original FreeView streams, hopefully soon this is what will also happen with the TV1/2/3/4/MaoriTV channels that Sky currently does have agreements to place in the EPG for Sky subs to see.

Ideally thats what most of us would  like to see, and it would suit Sky as they wouldn't need to use their capacity to carry the FTA channels. Don't think freeview would be happy letting this happen unless there was an appropriat concession from Sky like making Prime available on freeview now.

Possibly a good time to link Paul Norris's recent article into the mix.

Looks like Freeview (TVNZ) won't be available on Sky. See this

But not clear if the TV3 channels will be available

As I said earlier, and to echo Paul Norris, as a Tax Payer I am pretty unimpressed that TVNZ seems to want to be in the STB selling business, rather than being a broadcaster. Surely it matters not what you use to recieve a TV channel whether it be a FTA STB, Sky STB or a wet finger its all in the numbers watching that makes a channel.

You average Sky viewer watches Sky because of varitey and content (mainly Sports), these extra channels offered by TVNZ would not be enough of interest to most viewers (Sky or not) to make anyone really go out and suppliment their Sky box with a FreeView/FTA one. But if it was there as a matter of course there is 707k potential homes that can view it the day it starts.

I think in general Tax payers would be pretty unimpressed with this if they realised TVNZ's stance.

Right now I would back TVNZ's stance as I feel SKY is doing the same thing by holding Prime back from being available on the satellite freeview platform.  They have probably been looking for an excuse to keep it off the terrestrial lineup too.

I thought one of the reasons prime wasn't on freeview satellite was due to an agreement not to broadcast unencrypted in aussie due to the sports they carry. You probably wont ever see prime on freeview satellite due to this, but could do on the dvb-t service when it goes live.

As I noted in an earlier post and Cyril agreed, what's to stop Sky to just blank out the times when they are transmitting sports content on Freeview for which they have no rebroadcast rights. The decision not to go to Freeview is commercial, not constrained by contracts

hmmm all seems a bit childish to me. Both parties are missing out on viewers which one would have thought would equate to revenue.

I agree that it is a bit snarky of Sky to say no to Prime being on Freeview but it is just as bad if not worse that Freeview then withhold the freeveiw channels from Sky.

Ideally TVNZ would provide Sky with 6+7 and Sky should provide freeview with Prime. Then we would all be happy.

How would this be fair for TVNZ? What would the other Freeview broadcasters contribute to make this a reality?

There are some sizeable fees involved in broadcasting on Freeview...

This would be ideal from a consumer perspective. I know a lot of sky customers who want TVNZ-6 and their new sports channel. I also know a lot of people who would by a freeview STB if they could get prime.

As for fees. Sky already transmit Prime on Optus D1. Making that transmission FTA is relatively simple.

Yep, paid for by Tax Payers. Sure, some say well Sky subscribers should go and buy their own FTA/FreeView STB, ......yeah right!.

The success of any channel TVNZ launches is in the number of viewers, not the number of STB's sold. TVNZ/FreeView know the the FTA broadcaster model that we have had for 50yrs is on its way out. Viewers want choice, and by and large are happy to pay for it. I see it as suicide to cut 700k viewers out of the scene, do you really think that even 10% of Sky viewers will go out and get a FTA box, doubt it. But they would watch the channel they have paid taxs for if it was available along with the channels they pay privately for.
