so exchange rate is not the answer..

but what about the exchange rate between AU and the supplying country and NZ and the suppling country? its not just about comparing prices at the sail country

Why not?  I can't understand why people are saying this is even a thing.

The Australian dollar has to have a certain level of value, the NZ dollar and the supplying country whatever as well.  If there were a disparity that caused a $1000 difference, then you could play currency merry-go-round and buy one currency via one country and sell it back via another.

Currency trading you mean?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foreign_exchange_market
The largest market in the world by volume, you've never heard of it?

Prices are set by supply and demand at a basic level and companies try to maximize their profits, if they can get away with adding 20% to items in NZ compared to Australia then they will.

I notice nobody ever comes on to this forums and complains about how we pay only 20% the amount for car insurance that they do in the UK

Lets all demand that insurance companies raise their premiums to match other countries

NZ has poor economies of scale. End of story.

It costs a lot more to provide the same services, less ROI = higher prices at retail.

Yes, and I have heard of it.  The point is that if the difference in price shown above, a considerable one, were solely because of difference in conversion rates between the source currency, and the Australian and New Zealand dollars respectively, then it makes no sense if currency trading is a thing.  So, I am confused why people claim exchange rates could ever be the reason for the price difference.  But then, it seems like you're looking for an argument rather than clarifying anything.

Or not, because doing so would be taking a strawman argument at face value.  Insurance and televisions are apples and oranges.

NZ and Aussie are some of the cheapest places to buy TV's in the world, behind the States (and their frankly insane deals on the likes of Black Friday).
Take a trip through Japan some day, they pay A LOT more than us!
Basically TV's only roll around with around 20% margin from full price... everyone is stocking the same TV's (for the most part) so no one is exactly making a killing in the market place.
That's why the likes of Norman Ross / The Good Guys etc have gone under, and the likes of Powerstore have retracted significantly.
The other stores are trying to make profit out of other areas like furniture / appliances etc.

My suggestion, complain to the importers...
Let us know how that works out.

Just wondering if import duty and GST are applicable when comparing the Australian and NZ prices?

There is a small difference in GST rates.

I'm not sure about Aus, but I am pretty sure that NZ has no import duty on TVs, and hasn't had for quite a long time.

So at the moment the bundle offer on the Sony 55" 4K UHD is a PS4 console (plus 3 games) along with a movie HDD with 5 x 4k movies (but movies only last a limited time?) at NL is $2999 and the same at JB Hifi is $2774.

Both 'bundles' (PS4 & HDD 4k movies) appear to be only valid until 24th Dec, so unlikely to be available after this.

Any predictions on whether it is worthwhile waiting for the Boxing Day sale and a possibly good price at NL? Not greatly interested in the PS4 as would rather have Xbox One (personal preference).

Also interesting to note the Samsung HU8500 (4k UHD flat screen) is not on NL website although it is instore and at normal price is $1000 more expensive that the Sony.

If you don't care for the PS4 then you should wait till Boxing Day sale , it's worth the wait. All I can comment on.

I'm in the market for a TV in Japan at the moment.
Prices are mostly on a par with NZ - or slightly cheaper for comparable models.

you mean sales tax that has in the past year or so been raised from 5% to 8%?
Personally I find most things to be significantly cheaper than NZ - including NZ sourced products like vegetables and fish.

edit: I've lived in Japan for most of the past ten years and came back to NZ a few months ago. I was absolutely astounded by the cost of living in NZ now compared with when I last lived here. Japan has traditionally been considered an expensive country to live - but it's got nothing on NZ. Having said that - the price of electronic items in NZ seems about right. Not a cheap bargain but not what I’d consider overpriced (in comparison) either.

I bet you found it expensive here.  Over the past 10 year NZ has become a low wage high cost country to live in.    You just have to look at the price of dairy and meat here..

I would assume that the local store pricing is heavily influenced by price of stock from the local distributors.
